Guardian Angel
Khmer and Kui descendents in Surin believe that they were born under the protection of their guardian angel called “Gru”, or teacher. Villagers from many villages have similar rituals to worship their angel. The elderly in the family prepare offerings for their young generation. The ritual can be held since babies were born or at their young age. The offerings which are flowers, joss sticks and candles are put in a beautifully carved sugar palm leaf container called “Juam”. Some villages put a small red cloth inside. In addition, some families make red cloth in a mini umbrella shape because they believe that it symbolizes protection. The sugar palm leaf container is placed in a bowl with other offerings such as coins, fragrance, betel nuts, betel pipers, and to***co leaves. If some families think that the guardian is a female, they put a mirror for her. To place the whole offering, the elderly hang it high on a wall or put it on a Buddha statue's shelf. Some families offer flowers and pray to guardian angels of the whole family on Buddhist’s holy day. However, some families performed the worship only on the day they held the ritual. Juam Gru or the offerings to guardian angel belief is still preserved among Surin Khmer and Kui communities.

Ban Tha Sawang silk
Ban Tha Sawang silk is one of the finest silk in Thailand. Yok Thong or golden brocade silk is the unique silk pattern in Ban Tha Sawang. A combination of royal weaving patterns and folk weaving techniques with thin golden thread make golden brocade silk famous. This pattern has a complex and difficult weaving process. The weaving requires four to five people; two to three people help to lift heddles, one person for inserting the weaving shuttle and one person for weaving silk. Due to the technical complexity, the weavers can weave only six to seven centimeters of silk per day. Not only golden thread is used but also thin thread is commonly used for weaving. It is very hard to spin because silk thread must be taken from the inner cocoons carefully. Thin thread makes silk smooth, soft, and cool when worn. Ban Tha Sawang silk is amazingly beautiful and the most exceptional silk in Thailand.
