👉The Basilica Cistern, also known as the Yerebatan Cistern, is an ancient underground water reservoir located in Istanbul, Turkey. It was built during the reign of Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century AD, and was used to store water for the nearby Byzantine Great Palace and other buildings. The cistern is an impressive feat of engineering, with a capacity of up to 100,000 tons of water and a network of vaulted ceilings supported by columns.
Over the centuries, the cistern fell into disrepair and was largely forgotten. It was rediscovered and restored in the mid-20th century, and today it is open to the public as a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can walk along a wooden platform suspended above the water, while admiring the cistern's intricate brickwork and the dozens of ancient columns that support it. The Basilica Cistern remains one of Istanbul's most fascinating historical sites, offering a glimpse into the city's rich and complex past.
