Gobeklitepe
Gobeklitepe, Where Humanity's Story Began

Gobeklitepe was built twelve thousand years ago while humanity was still living in the stone age. Well, but by whom and why? Can we call say Gobeklitepe, Where Humanity's Story Began? These well-cut stones do not seem to belong to this world. Considering these were the times when humanity has not yet met the writing, pottery, and wheel, building a temple like this was like a 3-year-old boy Eiffel Tower with his Lego bricks.

Something extraordinary happened 12 thousand years ago. Agriculture helped us to settle down, develop religious teachings and build temples. Now we had time to think and leave monuments for our future offsprings. The first civilizations of the world were established 5000 years ago in Mesopotamia, where human beings first settled. Local people believe in the holiness of this region and they are not wrong.

Discovery of Gobeklitepe

Archaeologist Klaus Schmidt discovered Gobeklitepe in 1995. What discovered was a series of huge stone pillars and strange carvings on them. The width of the field was 300 meters by 300 meters. The archeology team managed to bring out four huge stone circles of enormous size. Each circle consisted of high stone walls separated by large T-shaped columns. In the middle, there were two obelisks with a height of 5.5 meters. No such structure has ever been encountered until today. It was obvious that these obelisks were not made for daily use. Professor Schmidt thinks that the structures on the Göbekli Tepe are unlike any other settlement found in Turkey or anywhere else. Perhaps the secret of their purpose of construction lies in stunning figures carved on stone pillars.

Hire a Tour Guide to visit Gobeklitepe

Animal reliefs, standing on sewn stones, act as guards. The signs on them show that they are not just ordinary sewn stones in fact, that T-shaped symbols are humans. According to experts, these figures are not from this world. They come from spiritual life. They look like people, but they are not human. Perhaps, they are the first gods depicted in human history.

Unbelievable Age of Gobeklitepe

This temple has been here for 11,500 years. Göbekli Tepe is a much more complex structure than Stonehenge, and it is 6000 years older than it, and 7000 years older than the Egyptian pyramids. Thousands of years before the construction of Göbekli Tepe, people believed that animals, plants, stones and everything had a soul. Man was only a small part of nature. In the caves you see figures of nature, but man was a small part of nature. The human figure is almost nonexistent. Humans were weak against nature. Man became stronger and started to rule animals and plants with the agricultural communities started appearing. We should observe Gobeklitepe with this in mind. These columns in the middle show a different mindset.

Hire a Tour Guide to visit Gobeklitepe

Mankind had now dominated nature. The wild animals pictured under the head of this anthropomorphic figure highlight the feeling that humans are superior to all. Now, we are not incapable of nature like in cave paintings actually We dominated it! We believe feasts may have been organized here. They needed a lot of food when feasts were organized so they should have started looking for a permanent food supply. This led to the power of hunting and gathering to control nature as well as to the rise of food production. Professor Schmidt’s theory is radical. He claims If these settled hunter-gatherers started their agricultural life only to meet the needs of the temple, it means that the stone age ended entirely for religious reasons. Religion has a tremendous impact on human psychology. It made us believe that we are superior to animals and other natural elements. Perhaps it was the formation of this mindset that allowed the domestication of animals and plants.

Gobeklitepe's Location

Sanliurfa city is 15 kilometers away to Gobeklitepe and Sanliurfa has an impressive history. It is believed that Hz. Abraham, the common prophet of the 3 great religions, was born here 4000 years ago. During archeological excavations tools made of flint were found in Sanliurfa. This proves that there is a settlement dating back to 11 thousand years in the region. According to experts, this proves that there was a settlement here during the construction of Göbekli Tepe. They built the first components of the temple on the bedrock. The two large standing stones in the middle were placed in nests 10 cm deep. These stones, formed by carving rocks from a single piece which was 5.5 meters high and weighed about 16 tons. Making these huge stone columns required great skill and craftsmanship. Lifting these huge stones is an interesting process. This process is like rowing on land. The levers under the column act as a shovel, when it pulls the other end of the lever towards itself, it acts as a shovel and the column moves forward. At least 50 men were required to carry this size of stones.

Hire a Tour Guide to visit Gobeklitepe

If these circular rooms symbolize the door that opens to the underground. Gobeklitepe should be related to the phenomenon of death in one way or another. Creatures carved into columns play a major role in the creation of this dark realm. There are very surprising findings on the radar scannings. What we understand is, there are 16 more buried structures under the hill. Different communities came together and they combined their strength and mastery to put masterwork on the religion they believed in. In this group, the masonry, the builder from one group, the carving master from another. And they are building a temple. Such a big project forced people to work together and trust each other. Experts understand that Göbeklitepen has turned the known human history upside down. Hunter and gatherer communities evolved and the cultural revolution took place before the agricultural revolution. Gobekli Tepe says ‘’It is worship that prepares the ground for the formation of civilizations’’. Gobeklitepe was buried underground when it was discovered. There are several theories about it. As I suggest local people started building their own shrines after a while, perhaps they were tired of climbing the big temple on top of the hill every time. And Göbekli Tepe started to lose its old reputation. In a way, it became a victim of his own success. It would be agriculture that shaped our new way of life. In this case, it would be inevitable for Göbekli Tepe to be buried deep in history.

Latest Discoveries in Ephesus Excavations
Archeologists working in Ephesus Ancient City made a surprisingly unusual find during the 2022 excavations. It may be the most important discovery in Ephesus since the terrace houses were found about 50 years ago! During the excavations of the ancient city of Ephesus, shops and the remains of a neighborhood belonging to the 7th century AD were found under a layer of fire. The newly discovered site is in Domitian Square, just adjacent to the Upper Agora, the political center of the ancient city of Ephesus.

Oil lamps that were found during the Latest Discoveries in Ephesus Excavations

Several shops have been unearthed in the 170 square meter area so far. Ceramic pots, numbering in the thousands, were found in these shops. The excavated area apparently disappeared unexpectedly in 614 - 615 AD. A thick and dense layer of ash covered all the household items in the rooms. Thanks to this thick layer of ash, all of the artifacts have been preserved until today.

Kusadasi Kaleici Mosque
Kusadasi Kaleici Mosque was constructed by Okuz Mehmet Pasha in 1618 one year before he passed away. Therefore, it was also named as "Okuz Mehmet Pasha Mosque". This is the oldest mosque in Kusadasi and was registered as the first degree monumental protected structure in the town.

Kusadasi Kaleici Mosque

It was constructed on a 1800 square meter land with a courtyard. Kusadasi Kaleici Mosque can hold up to 550 people. It has a square plan and built with cut stone material. The main entrance gate has geometrical inlaid works peculiar to Ottoman wood work techniques. These works are made up of mother-of-pearl, ivory and silver inlaid works, but they don't exist any more today. The dome of the main building rests on a 16 cornered wheel. The dome was covered with lead. The last entry section of the mosque (the outer portico) was made of wood but this section was unfortunately renovated with concrete in 1970. Some repair in 1830 was carried out but the minaret was not restored as it was in good condition at the of restoration.

Ho**ah in Turkey
To***co and variants were already used by people even before many essential tools were discovered. While to***co leaves were burned for worship purposes at first, people later started to enjoy the pleasure of smoking. Smoking systems took many shapes in many civilizations like pipes, ci**rs, ci******es… However, **ah was the most complicated one. Let's have a look at the subject of Ho**ah in Turkey.

Ho**ah in Turkey

I personally do not smoke ho**ah or something similar regularly, and I do not want to encourage anyone reading this article into smoking. I wrote this article with purpose of giving a historic perspective on ho**ah and place of ho**ah in the Turkish culture.

Ho**ah means coconut in Persian. The first use of ho**ah was seen in India, and then the Iranians first used it, and then it became widespread among the Arabs. The Ottomans met to***co in the 16th century. And since then, the use of ho**ah has continued.

A Classic Ho**ah with Wooden Body

Maybe ho**ah is the most common way of calling this style of smoking, but it has many names in the different parts of the world, such as; Arjilah, Nargilah, Sisha, Nargil, and Sh**ha. We mostly call instead of ho**ah in Turkey, but I will refer to it as Ho**ah since it is the most commonly and internationally used name.

The ho**ah went through many stages until it became what it is today. The Indians started the first types of ho**ah smoking by burning the dried to***co outside the coconut with a straw they inserted into the walnut. The ho**ah, which was pioneered by the Indians with coconuts became gourd over time, and gradually to porcelain and bronze bodies. Today, it even sometimes has ceramic tiles, silver and glass body.

Ho**ah with fruit flavors

Ho**ah, which used to be smoked only with tumbak to***co*, became very popular and widespread in our country with its flavored varieties, which were later smoked in Egypt. Ho**ah has not only been the culture of the easterners, but has also been used in Europe for a long time. In fact, in France, George Sand made Balzac a ho**ah addict, as well as smoking himself.

Ho**ah basically consists of four parts. Mouthpiece (sipsi), lule (the part where to***co and fire are put), lance (pipe) and body (the part where water or milk is put). One of the other materials that add beauty to the pleasure of smoking ho**ah is glass ho**ah bottles.

Ho**ah and its special coal cubes

Preparing the ho**ah also requires some knowledge and talent. These are in summary; The water should be changed after each use, the nozzle should be washed and cleaned after each use, the mouthpiece which is called sipsi should be in hygienic packages, the lances must be cleaned periodically, and the unused to***co is kept in closed boxes. In addition, it is important that ho**ahs with flavored to***co are used only in that flavored ho**ah sets. For example, mint flavored to***co cannot be smoked with an orange flavored to***co.

Although sayings such as "a ho**ah is worth 50 ci******es" are used among the people, there are also aspects that distinguish ho**ah from ci******es, namely positive aspects compared to ci******es. Since to***co comes through the water, it gets rid of some tar and poison which of those you normally inhale during smoking a cigarette. In addition, the smoke coming through a long hose (lance) leaves some harmful substances there. Since ho**ah cannot be easily obtained and smoked like ci******es, it is only used at certain times. We can't smoke ho**ah while walking. Therefore, if we compare it with others, we can say that ho**ah is the best of the worst.

Some ho**ah cafés offer a food and drinks too

Undoubtedly, the most important element for ho**ah is to***co. To***co is chopped, covered with a damp towel overnight. The quality of the ho**ah is related to the waiting time here. Ho**ah to***co can be mixed with fragrant fruits such as apple, mint, apricot, strawberry, banana, lemon, pineapple. To enjoy ho**ah, it should be smoked slowly. Although ho**ah smoking undoubtedly varies for everyone, the common point is that it is enjoyed by smoking heavily.

In the past, ho**ah to***co was much harsher. It was made from leaf to***co called tumbak. The damage it caused to people's lungs was worse than today. We can say that the wide variety of fruit-flavored to***cos which are popular nowadays are a little more optimistic compared to the previous types of to***co. In addition, we can learn about this with a very simple test. If you inhale the cigarette and blow the smoke on a paper napkin, and if you inhale the ho**ah and blow on a paper napkin, you will clearly see the difference. But please never forget that ''It is best not to smoke at all''. 👍

Everyone enjoys ho**ah in Turkey

Smoking ho**ah is not like smoking a cigarette, but like a pipe smoking. As you breathe in the air, the water in the bottle should bubble and therefore the to***co should burn. Ho**ah is generally drawn into the stomach using the diaphragm and blown by stretching the diaphragm too. The difference between ho**ah and cigarette is that the to***co smoke cools in the water. In this way, harmful substances in to***co are also captured by the water. A culture of conversation has been formed around ho**ah.

The most important feature of ho**ah is that it is smoked in a place of its own. This brought respect and enjoyment of ho**ah culture among the ho**ah smokers society. Ho**ah and conversation have become joys which progresses together. Going to ho**ah cafeterias is especially preferred by middle-aged people. Instead of smoking ho**ah alone, having a nice conversation and enjoying ho**ah is much more enjoyable.

A Ho**ah café in Istanbul on the beginning of the 20th century

Today, modern ho**ahs are spreading rapidly. These ho**ahs are much preferred over traditional ho**ahs. The design of these ho**ahs is slightly different from the older and traditional ho**ahs. Modern ho**ahs, which generally have a more successful design and are enriched with certain accessories, have many models such as portable ho**ahs, LED light ho**ahs, bag ho**ahs, matte ho**ahs. Classic ho**ahs in the past were larger and generally used in a stable environment, and it was very difficult to carry on trips, even almost impossible. However, nowadays, with the production of ho**ahs with bags, it has become possible to take up less space and be carried in a small bag by being easily disassembled and mounted.

* Tumbak to***co is wide and tick leafed Persian to***co which is suitable to be burned on the ho**ah.

Weather in Istanbul and What to Wear in Istanbul
Istanbul Weather in the Upcoming Days

Istanbul is famous for being a giant city with a population of over fifteen million people. Apart from being rich with its people and history, Istanbul is also very rich with its climate. Weather in Istanbul and What to Wear in Istanbul are the biggest questions before visiting this magnificent city. Lets dig in and find answers.

Get your Istanbul Tour Guide

What to wear in Istanbul?

There are many days in the city where you can start the day in Winter and finish it wearing a t-shirt by the Bosphorus having your fish. Seaside parts of the city tend to be more humid and windy. Considering you will spend most of your time in the golden horn area which is completely surrounded by the sea, you should have a well-thought dressing plan. I recommend my guests coming in Autumn and Spring, having multi-layered clothes in case there will be common temperature changes during the day. The best is having a shirt below a sweater and a jacket on top. A thin leather jacket will be enough in the autumn and springtime. But I strongly recommend tick clothing especially if you are visiting Istanbul in the mid-winter time. Also please do not forget summer temperatures in Istanbul can reach 30 Celsius and more degrees so thin linen clothes and shorts are recommended. You can always contact me If you have any further questions on Istanbul weather and how to pack for Istanbul tours. See you soon in a lukewarm Istanbul day, Hasan Gülday.

Weather in Istanbul

I believe the best times to visit Istanbul should be from March to May and also between September and November. Since there is not so much rainfall and the temperatures are manageable. Please keep it in mind temperature in Istanbul is averagely above 30-celsius degrees from June to Septemeber. Small cruise tours and city center attractions tours are manageable but I don't recommend walking tours. The coldest month is January and there is often snow in the city center. Snow doesn't become a big nuisance since snow plower trucks make a great job.

Surprising Customs in Turkey
Turkey is a wide geography where different cultures live together. Coming from Central Asian culture to Anatolian lands synthesized with Islamic culture, Turkish culture forms an important cultural mosaic that includes a big variety of traditions and customs.

Turkish Henna Night Custom

There are many customs that seem strange when seen by the outsiders for the first time. Although many of these traditions are now found only in small settlements, some of these traditions still live in modern cities as well. Some of these traditions from Turkey for the first timers are surprising. Here are some examples.

Turkish Marriage Customs

Even though Turkish people start their relations very modern style, some old traditions have to be followed during their weddings.

A Turkish wedding at the time of the Ottoman Empire

Families with single daughters erect a bottle on the chimney of their house to show that they have single girls. The groom-to-be, one of the young people of the region, who wants to aspire to that girl, tries to break the bottle by targeting this bottle standing on the chimney. The young man who broke the bottle aspires to the girl of marriage age in the house and the boy sends the elders of the family, who are called the seer, to the girl's house to ask for the girl.

If the decision of the girl to marry and her family is positive, the word is given after the tradition of asking for a girl and the wedding preparations begin.

Turkish Flag

The traditional colors of the Turks appear mostly in weddings, holidays and special days.

The marriage of two young people who love each other in Turkey is shared by all of their loved ones. Of course, there is a rule in this tradition that; There is no wedding between two major religious holidays.

Holding a wedding between the religious holidays of the Turks, the Eid al-Adha and the Feast of Sacrifice, is considered as bad luck, and the wedding dates are never coincided with these two holidays.

Turkish Hand Kiss on the Forehead

The groom cannot see the bride before the wedding, and ties a red belt around the waist of the bride leaving the father's house. Also, there are many traditional items such as not showing the bride to the groom who comes to take the bride and not receiving a tip for opening the door.

Festive Customs of Turkish People

Including Ramadan and Eid in Turkey there are two religious holidays. These holidays are the days when people come together and feel the national unity and solidarity.

Among the most important traditional motifs are waking up early on holidays, wearing new clothes bought for the holiday, and visiting relatives.

Turkish Baby Traditions

During the feast visits, the younger ones go to the elders of the family and kiss their hands. The peace of the holiday traditions in Turkey are joyful and something to experience yourself.

While sweets, candies and baklava are served during the holidays of Ramadan, people distribute the meat of the lamb they sacrificed to each other.

Newborn Customs in Turkey

More difficult traditions await at the door after couples cross all the tough traditions and finally get married. One of these is the pressure exerted by the families of the couples to have children as soon as possible.

Newly married young couples often receive requests from families to have children with traditional phrases such as "Come on, give us grandchildren now, the joy of the house is a child, no home without children, no home".

Turkish Newborn Traditions

The newborn child is usually named after his grandfather or one of the family elders. While naming a newborn child, the Quran is recited in one ear and the name of the child is told aloud three times in the other ear. Thus, the name of the newborn baby is named.

Newborn babies do not touch the evil eye so the baby is not affected by bad energies. An evil eye bead is attached to the collar right after the baby is born and this evil eye bead is never removed. In addition, the newborn is not taken outside until 40 days old and is not shown to anyone other than family members. Read more and hire a recommended Tour Guide in Turkey.
