🐢The Tortoise Trainer 🐢 Did you know that the painting was named different at first. It was called ‘Tortoises and Man’, but people started to call it ‘Tortoise Trainer’ later on. In Ottoman Empire at the times of the 'Tulip Era' people usually used to have various outdoor events and entertainment. It is said that on some of those event nights, there are tortoises walking in the public parks and palace gardens, with candles burning on their shell for visual pleasure. Basically they were walking candlesticks. And it is believed that there are people (like that dervish in the painting) entrusted by the palace, training, care taking those tortoises. If you ever visit Istanbul, you can find it in Pera Museum!
