When did the banana come to Alanya? 🍌🍌

In the second half of the 19th century, the sea was the connection between Alanya and the rest of the world.
Ships departed from Alanya to Cyprus and Egypt, among others. The warehouses were filled with tea, sesame seeds, beans, and various nuts and fruits. These were exchanged for salt, soap, oil and decorations from distant lands.
After such a trip to Egypt, the merchant Serifali Ahmet Aga brought a banana plant to Alanya and planted it in his backyard. When the bananas started to grow, he forbade his family to eat them, as they were undoubtedly poisonous.
After a while, the ripe bananas fell to the ground and they were eaten by ants and other insects. The housekeeper saw this and understood that the bananas were not poisonous at all. So she tasted one and liked it very much. Then she told everyone about it.
In this way, the myth about the poisonous banana plant came to an end and people started growing bananas in Alanya. Around 1920 the demand increased enormously and banana plantations arose everywhere.
The cultivation of bananas in Turkey is concentrated on a 200 km stretch; located on the Mediterranean coast from Manavgat to Anamur.
This is the only place in Turkey where the weather conditions are suitable for growing bananas. The banana plant is extremely vulnerable and needs a lot of water and a mild climate. In winter, when the weather becomes unstable, the bananas are covered with plastic to protect them. Bananas can be harvested twice a year and one plant can produce up to 75 kilos per harvest.
Every year 40,000 tons of bananas are produced in Turkey, but this is not even enough for the demand on the domestic market.
