📍The green column was commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who tasked the renowned architect Mimar Sinan with determining the center of Istanbul and building a mosque for his son, Prince Mehmet. Mimar Sinan, after measuring in Suriçi, placed a green column at the intersection of the courtyard wall of Şehzadebaşı Mosque and the Nevşehirli Damat Ibrahim Pasha Complex, marking the center of Istanbul. The green column, once described as taller and capable of rotating at its location, lost these features due to a rise in road level. Presently, there are reports of cracks and a lack of protection for the green column.
💎According to a story surrounding the discovery of the diamond, it was found in a garbage dump in Istanbul by a rag-and-bone collector in the late 17th century. The diamond is said to have taken its name from this person, who was also known as “kaşıkçı” (spoonmaker). According to the tale, the spoonmaker sold the found gem to a jeweler for much less than its actual value.
