Inspiration - A Visit with Heather Jones and Leroy Clarke

Our tour in June took place during Pentecost week. We thought the theme then must be "Inspiration", meaning occurring in spirit and from the spiritual realm. We visited the designer, Heather Jones and the artist/philosopher, Leroy Clarke - two people whose work and lives have been divinely inspired. We were not disappointed. Ms Jones shared of the inspiration that has been with her for her entire life and the faith that led her sometimes completely in the dark to some of her greatest achievements. At Mr Clarke's, we were presided over by an old wisdom. He shared with us deep insights into life and the responsibility to the youth.

Jewels of Nature - An Organic Awakening

10/05/2011

In the Caura Valley we encountered Jewels of Nature, a musical trio - Ja Ja Onilu and his two sons, Modupe and Baba. In their workshop we experienced an organic awakening. Sounds of nature reproduced through bamboo, calabash, seeds and thorns. We sat enthralled by the sounds of birds, crapaud, rain washing the forest, all brought forth by the blessing of their hands. As Ja Ja says, we were born to create, our bodies made to absorb the energies of nature. Sometimes we forget this, caught up as we are in the business of making a living. But, for a time today we were given a chance to remember.

Our visit to Moruga was made most memorable by our wonderful host, Noreiga Granger, a true Moruga native who prepared a real Moruga meal for us. We had corn fish and provision (the sweetest sweet potato I’ve ever tasted), spinach and stew chicken, corn served on fig leaves, served with homemade tamarind sauce. We washed this down with juice from the rough skinned lemon and topped off with homemade ice cream. Needless to say we almost didn’t Moruga.
Moruga has a rich and colourful history. Renowned locally for its obeah tradition through Pa Neza and Mother Cornhox, a visit to Moruga is like a step back in time. It’s the site of Trinidad’s first depot and first Catholic Church, in which there was an attempt to replicate St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
The most amazing site was the River of the Moon, a veritable rock museum that flows like a river for more than a mile. There we saw rocks of the most unusual shapes with even more unusual markings.
