En el marco de la COP 16 organizada por Colombia, que también preside la Asociación de Estados del Caribe (AEC), la Secretaría de la AEC convocó un dinámico intercambio sobre el tema «Preservar la biodiversidad del Gran Caribe: Unidos contra la erosión costera». Este evento reunió a líderes clave y expertos para abordar la protección de la biodiversidad en el Gran Caribe.

Durante el evento se firmó la Declaración de Interés entre la AEC y la WorldView International Foundation (WIF), para reforzar la cooperación regional en materia de conservación, desarrollo de competencias y restauración de los ecosistemas costeros y marinos.

Este es un gran paso para enfrentar los efectos del cambio climático en la región y apoyar a comunidades que protegen estos ecosistemas.

The publication of a Guidebook for the Protection and Rehabilitation of Caribbean Beaches was one of the accomplishments of the Sandy Shorelines Project. Dr. Jose Luis Juanes presented this Guidebook during the project’s closing workshop. This guidebook provides scientific and engineering criteria specifically tailored for the unique tropical beaches of the Greater Caribbean region. The criteria focus on the monitoring and mitigation of coastal erosion.

The establishment of the regional coastal erosion monitoring network was the focus of component 3 of the Sandy Shorelines Closing Workshop.
