Hehuanshan (Mt. Hehuan) located in the neighboring area of Hualien and Nantou Counties, and is the watershed for several major rivers in Taiwan including Dajia, Zhoshui and Liwu Rivers. The steep terrain area covers 457 hectares and elevation is between 2300 and 3400 meters above sea level where is the highest in the Taiwan National Forest Recreation Area. The average annual temperature is only 6 ℃ therefore there is cool summer and cold winter. It is the best place to enjoy mountain flowers, winter whites and the mountain terrain landscape.
The nearby alpines are well-known including Hehuan Main Peak, East Peak, North Peak, West Peak, Shimen Moutain, Shimen North Peak and Hehuanjian Moutains. They are all above 3,000 meters yet difficult for climbing. Therefore they are the first choices for climbing “Top Hundreds Peak”. The far away view comprise of Qilailienfeng, Nanhutaishan and Chungyanjian Mountain of the Central Mountain Range. The magnificent mountain landscape is fairly touching. Due to low temperature in winters (in January, the coldest month, average temperatures is -1.2 ℃), it snows when a cold front arrives. Snow-covered firs and crystal hanging ice poles or icefalls make the area the best place for enjoying the snow. Because the area is located in the cloudy elevation, the magnificent sunrise, sea of clouds, the sunset glow are unique in Taiwan. During clear autumn days, stratus, cirrus and cumulus clouds interchange immediately. Because the area is dark without any bright influence, it has become the best location for watching the stars mountainous region in Taiwan.
