Gondeshwar Temple, Sinnar, Maharashtra

The Gondeshwar temple is an 11th-12th century Hindu temple located in Sinnar, Nashik district, Maharashtra. It features a panchayatana plan; with a main shrine dedicated to Shiva; and four subsidiary shrines dedicated to Surya, Vishnu, Parvati, and Ganesha.

HISTORY:

The Gondeshwar temple was built during the rule of the Seuna (Yadava) dynasty, and is variously dated to either the 11th or the 12th century. Sinnar was a stronghold of the dynasty during their pre-imperial period, and modern historians identify it with Seunapura, a town established by the Yadava king Seuanchandra.

Architecture

The Gondeshwar temple is built in the Bhumija style, in form of a panchayatana complex, which features a main shrine surrounded by four subsidiary shrines. The temple is situated on a rectangular platform that measures 125 x 95 feet.

The temple complex was originally surrounded by a wall, which is now mostly destroyed. The main shrine is dedicated to Shiva, and contains a large linga. The shrine and the Nandi pavilion facing it are located on an elevated plinth. The mandapa (pavilion), which has porches on three sides, acts as the entrance to the temple. The shrine has a Nagara-style shikhara (tower), whose finial is no longer preserved. The walls of the temple depict scenes from the ancient epic Ramayana. The subsidiary shrines are dedicated to Surya, Vishnu, Parvati, and Ganesha: all of them have a porch. They are rectangular in plan, and include a mandapa, an antarala (vestibule), and the garbhagriha (sanctum).

is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun in , India. The tomb was commissioned by Humayun's first wife and chief consort, Empress Bega Begum (also known as Haji Begum), in 1569-70, and designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son, Sayyid Muhammad, Persian architects chosen by her. It was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent, and is located in Nizamuddin East, Delhi, India, close to the Dina-panah Citadel, also known as Purana Qila (Old Fort), that Humayun found in 1533. It was also the first structure to use red sandstone at such a scale. The tomb was declared a in 1993, and since then has undergone extensive restoration work, which is complete. Besides the main tomb enclosure of Humayun, several smaller monuments dot the pathway leading up to it, from the main entrance in the West, including one that even pre-dates the main tomb itself, by twenty years; it is the tomb complex of Isa Khan Niyazi, an Afghan noble in Sher Shah Suri's court of the Suri dynasty, who fought against the Mughals, constructed in 1547 CE.

Travellers and tourists visiting get so glued to the beauty of the Taj Mahal that they tend to ignore other gorgeous sites in the city.

One such unexplored and well-kept secret of Agra is , also known as . But unlike Taj Mahal, the Red Taj was built by a wife in memory of her beloved ‘man’ and this man was called John Hessing!

Who was John Hessing?

John Hessing was basically a Dutch traveller who ended up becoming an army officer and served in the troop of the Marathas in Agra. Happy with his loyalty and dedication, he was given the command of the Agra Fort by Daulatrao Scindia in 1799. But unfortunately, the fort was attacked by British Army in the year 1803, during when the commander John Hessing was killed in the battlefield trying to defend his fort.

Devastated and heartbroken by his husband’s death, his wife Ann Hessing commissioned this monument in the memory of her husband. The tomb was designed to look like the Taj Mahal but in red sandstone, a near replica of the original Taj Mahal in Agra.

The Red Taj, as it is called, displays Mughal architecture and stands on a square platform with a corridor around, while the top is a typical dome-shaped structure. The dome-shaped pavilions surrounding the Red Taj are symbolic of pride and honour. You can see the grave of John Hessing inside the central hall and a few English inscriptions that are engraved on his tomb.

Today, the Red Taj is not more than a forgotten tomb or a cemetery in Agra, but it’s certainly a reminder of the era when European adventures and mercenaries visited the country and earned a name for themselves in the local Indian troops. John Hessing too was one of those brave soldiers who rose to the rank of commander. The or is housed inside a Catholic cemetery in Agra.

, the largest palace complex of located on the banks of , is the epitome of a colossal citadel that is a concoction of Rajasthani, Mughal, Medieval, European and Oriental architecture. The construction of this magnum opus, started by Maharana Udai Singh II, was carried on by his successors.
The palace encompasses sections like the Rai Angan (Royal Courtyard), Krishna Vilas, Badi Mahal, Mor Chowk, Sheesh Mehal (ravishing compilation of a place full of mirrors), Zenana Mahal (Ladies Chamber) and its central courtyard – Lakshmi Chowk. One striking aspect about the palace is the paintings that adorn the walls and their deftness at vivid storytelling. The paintings are brimming with riveting details of hunting escapades, durbar sessions, elephant fights, festival celebrations and battle scenes on the canvas that are visually captivating enough to screen the entire sequence in your imagination. The museum also showcases exquisite exhibits of portraits done by the celebrated artist Raja Ravi Varma. It’s no wonder that this part of Udaipur has caught the fancy of cinema as well – both Indian and international. This palace and the vicinity has played host to the filming of movies like The Guide, Oc*****sy, and Ye Jawani Hai Deewani, among many others. In addition to this, the affluent have also found a way to experience the aristocratic life by hosting events like wedding ceremonies on the premises.

Tens of thousands of diyas make their way to the ghats of at dusk and are lit by thousands of travellers who gather on the ghats.✨

There are two ways to be a part of this shimmering carnival. Be on the ghats to light up diyas and arrange them in a grander pattern, or row in the to get stunned by the golden lights that take over the dark.🚣‍♀

The Ganga Aarati that day is a spectacle too, along with the city streets that are brought to life by colours and lamps.🙏🏼💫

鹿野苑Sarnath
