GREAT MIGRATION IN SOUTHERN SERENGETi

At the end of December the great migration usually arrives with its 2 million animals in Ndutu. Wildebeests, zebras and gazelles come here to give birth to their calves and stay here until April. Thousands of animals are born every day from December to March. The grass in this area is rich in nutrients for young animals. And because it is short, the adults can spot approaching predators from far. It is therefore a safe place to raise young zebras and wildebeests. Ndutu is a very beautiful region and rich in wild animals. In addition, it is the only nature reserve in Tanzania where you are allowed to drive off-road. This allows you to get very close to the animals. Many predators are attracted by the calving happening here and roam this vast plain: lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas.

Mara River Crossing.
most people think of the ‘Great Migration’, they think of the iconic wildebeest river crossings that take place in the Masai Mara and Serengeti over peak safari season from June to October.

The Great Migration is in fact a year-long cyclical event, whereby wildebeest and other plains game follow the rains from the east of the Serengeti down through the north-west of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, back up through the central and west of the Serengeti, all the way up north to the Masai Mara, and then back down again through the center and east of Serengeti.

To supplement their huge size, elephants tend to drink tons of water daily. An elephant can drink up to fifty gallons or 200 liters of water daily. (Equal to the amount of water in the bathtub) An adult male elephant can consume up to 55 gallons or 212 liters of water daily, which takes about five minutes to accomplish. Interestingly, their trunk can accommodate 2.5 gallons of water in a single go. The normal intake of adult elephants should be up to 200 liters. However, if an elephant is consuming water above the normal range, it might indicate that something is wrong and the elephant should be medically observed. Elephants suffering from TBC conditions might consume up to 600 liters a day.
