A trio of Grant's Gazelles look for grass in the very dry landscape of the Serengeti. During hot and dry weather the Grant's Gazelle have the ability to adjust their body temperature to conserve water. Raising the body temperature causes them to sweat less, meaning they are able to retain more water.

What big teeth you have!! Lions have 4 canines, 2 on top, and 2 on bottom, measuring around 10 cm (4 inches) long. They don't often get cavities due to their meat-based diet, but they are prone to dental damage and wear with age. A broken or missing tooth can make a big difference on their ability to have a successful hunt.

A lioness separates from the pride and has her cubs in private. She is their sole caregiver during that time and only rejoins the pride when the cubs are a couple months old. A mama lion continues to nurse her cubs for the first 6 month, and teaches them to hunt and survive. Male lion cubs usually leave their mother's pride between 2 and 3 years old, but female cubs often become a member of their mother's pride staying by her side throughout her life.

In the National Parks the animals are in charge! They are free range, not fenced in. That means encounters can sometimes be up close. Guides are trained in animal behavior; they watch for cues that the animals are getting exhausted or aggressive and are able to respond accordingly. Park rules also keep visitors safe, like staying in the vehicle unless in designated areas, not touching, feeding, pestering or participating in other behaviors that can cause harm to either humans or animals. It is an amazing experience and privilege to watch animals in their natural habitat.

An elephant trunk is amazing! It's not just a nose, even though they do have a phenomenal sense of smell! They use their trunk like we use a hand - to reach, to lift and to touch. They can use it as a snorkel in a river crossing and to syphon water and spray themselves to cool off or bathe. What they don't do is actually drink thru their trunk! Instead, they use it to pick up the water and then place it in their mouth.

They are often called the tree of life because they are a spectacular source of water for many species in the dry season. One tree can hold as much as 32,000 gallons of water! For Zebras about 90% of their diet comes from grasses. They pluck the grass from the ground by gripping with their lips and teeth and whipping their head upward or to the side. They have mostly flat teeth that they use to grind the grass. Because it takes a lot of grass to get the nutrients they need, they spend about 18 hours of their day eating!

Flamingos are filter feeders,using their tongue as a Sieve to catch food,They use their feet to agitate the water and disturb the algae,shrimp,and lava,Put it's neck down under the water with its mouth essentially upside down,then close its mouth and force the water through comb-like extensions on its beak,using it's tongue in order to push the water out while keeping all the food in.

Their coats are yellow-gold,and adult males have shaggy manes that range in color from blond to reddish-brown to black.

Adult male elephants are solitary in nature but may associate with other bulls(adult males)in small unstable groups.Males will leave the family unit(natal unit)between 12 and 15 years of age.

Bulls who associate in small groupings have a hierarchal -ranking social structure.

Whether your day consists of hanging out, basking in the sun with friends or hard at work inside, find a little joy in your day!

Hippos enjoy quality beach time, but their skin is very sensitive. Not to worry, they make their own sunscreen! They secrete an oily red colored liquid that helps to scatter light and protect their skin. Hippo "sweat" has been studied as a possibility for eventual use as sunscreen for humans. Not sure about that idea. I have a feeling it might feel very thick, sticky and possibly smelly!

Black and White Colobus Monkeys can be frequently sighted in the forested areas throughout Tanzania. They like to be high up in the trees and can move agilely between branches. Even though, unlike other primates, they do not have thumbs.

Look who is hiding in the trees! Black Rhinos are actually fairly hard to spot on safari. They are endangered, so the population is small, they tend to spend long parts of their life solo (especially males), and even though they can be aggressive when frightened they are somewhat timid. The biggest threat to Rhinos everywhere, is humans.

The sweet face of a predator at rest! Though somewhat dog-like in appearance, Hyenas are not related to dogs, they are actually more closely related to cats. But they are neither dog nor cat, hyenas are . . . . well, hyenas! They are a distinctive species, with several sub-species. The most commonly seen hyena in Tanzania, is the Spotted Hyena.

Wildebeest follow the rain and are said to be able to smell it from thousands of kilometers away. More than 1.5 to 2 Million Wildebeest make the long trek across Tanzania every year and it is an impressive sight to see! It is considered to be one of the 7 Wonders of the Natural World. Giraffes are the master of the power nap!! They sleep in 30 second to 2 minutes intervals throughout the day, racking up only about 30 minutes of total sleep time. Giraffes in captivity sleep longer, up to as much as 4 hours per day. Nighty night giraffe!! Good bye giraffe week!

Giraffe are herbivores and they eat a lot! They eat around 34 kilograms/75 pounds per day and they especially like acacia.

Sometimes you just have to wait . . .

Yes, that is right it is national sea monkey day! Sold in the toy section in the USA as a barrel of monkeys, you can grow your very own "sea monkeys"! So what does that have to do with flamingos? "Sea monkeys" are actually brine shrimp, and brine shrimp are a main component of the flamingo diet. As it happens, their pink coloring comes from the algae the brine shrimp eat.
