Safari Ants, Siafu or Driver Ants.
--------------------------------------------------------
These ants are found throughout Africa though are not often seen, except when they are on the march in enormous, usually on dull, damp days. They normally live just below the surface and live very secretive, subterranean lives. Then, quite suddenly, usually towards the end of the rainy season, countless thousands of them suddenly appear like massive armies, swarming over every living thing that stands in their way. They carpet the ground. All creatures great and small rush away as fast as possible to avoid being eaten. They have very powerful Jawas and can inflict a very painful bite, though it is not harmful.
It is quite easy to step on a swarm of these ants without knowing it, as they stay hidden among the short grass stems. They often do not bite until you inadvertently squeeze them, and do can climb right up your trousers and into you shirt before giving you a nip!
"I have woken up on several occasions feeling as though I was being stung, only to discover that my tent was covered in a seething mass of black ants. The only option is to leap out of bed and run out of the tent with a good tin of insect repellent and spray oneself vigorously with it. They will eventually move on in an hour or two".
However, extricating them from one's hair is always rather tedious. It is highly unlikely that this will ever happen on your visit.
