When it comes to avian ambush tactics, the black heron has mastered an inventive approach. It begins by wading through the shallows, pausing strategically to spread its wings out like an umbrella. The dome-like bubble of bird and wings creates the illusion of shade which attracts small fish, ironically lured into the shadows in search of safety. Once within striking range the heron will skewer any unsuspected prey with a rapid flick of its bill. The tactic is known as canopy feeding and some theories suggest it could serve multiple functions. In addition to attracting prey, the shade may also help reduce glare on the water's surface making it easier for the birds to spy their dinner.โฃ
