It's not always about nice pictures or really weird fish. As a matter of fact, this picture is neither good, nor well edited nor even particularly interesting per se.

So why post it then?

Well, it's becasue despite having dived for more than 6 years in our waters, we had never seen it before. We found it just off our beach. It looks like a strange mixture between a boxfish and a puffer and burries itself in the sand when startled.

From what we managed to gather from our books, the most likely suspect is that it is a shortfin puffer [Torquigener brevipinnis].

Still not very interesting story, right?

Ok, so the interesting part of all of this, is that according to both internet and our books, it is exclusively found in the west Pacific, we couldn't find any records of it being in the Indian Ocean, except one article which was ardently debating the possibility of it being found once on the East coast of India... you can find the article here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/236852984_Discovery_of_Torquigener_brevipinnis_Regan_1903_Osteichth_Tetraodontidae_from_the_Indian_coast
