FUN FACTS ABOUT ANTELOPE KNOWN AS " TOPI ".

Scientific Name: Damaliscus lunatus.
Appearance: Topis are medium-sized antelopes with a reddish-brown coat, dark face markings, and curved, ridged horns. Males tend to have larger horns than females.
Habitat: Found in East and Central Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. They live in open grasslands and savannas.
Diet: Herbivores that mainly graze on grasses, sometimes eating herbs and shrubs.
Social Structure: They live in herds of up to 40 individuals, consisting mainly of females and their young. Older males are often solitary or form small bachelor groups. Males are territorial, especially during mating season.
Breeding: Mating occurs during the wet season. Females give birth to a single calf after an 8-month gestation period. Males compete for territory and use displays, such as "pronking" (jumping in the air), to attract mates.
Speed and Defense: Known for their speed, they can run up to 50 miles per hour to escape predators like lions and cheetahs. Their sharp eyesight and strong instincts help them detect threats early.
Conservation Status: Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, but they face threats from habitat loss and hunting in some areas.
Unique Behavior: Topis are not highly migratory, staying in one region. They communicate with vocalizations, body language, and scent marking to defend their territory and communicate with other herd members.

Wild & Wise: Here are five roar-some facts about lions you may (or may not) know. 🦁

✨Nearly all wild lions live in Africa, but one small population exists elsewhere. The African lion is found in Africa, south of the Sahara desert, while the Asiatic exists in one small population around Gir Forest National Park in western India.

✨They start off spotty: Young lions have rosettes and spots on their sandy coats, but these generally disappear as they mature.

✨Lions do most of their hunting at night as their eyes have adapted to the dark - a huge advantage over their prey. Lions also hunt during storms - the noise, rain, and/or wind make it harder for prey to see and hear them, increasing their chances of a successful hunt.

✨Lions are the only known cat species to roar together - with even young cubs joining in with their mews. The calling sequence usually lasts about 40 seconds and can be heard from five miles away.

✨There aren’t as many lions as you’d think: There are thought to be as few as 23,000 lions left in the wild. In fact, lions have disappeared from over 90% of their historical range

8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit
Embark on your journey at Lemosho Gate, where a 4.8km (3mi) trek through the lush rainforest awaits, taking 3-4 hours to reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, ascending from 2389m (7838ft) to 2785m (9137ft). The day starts with a scenic drive from Moshi through charming villages to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. As you wait for your permits, immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere of crews preparing for the climb. The trail offers stunning rainforest views, winding paths, and insights into local flora and fauna. Given the muddy and slippery conditions at these lower elevations, gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended.

On Day 2, you’ll trek from Mti Mkubwa Camp at 2785m (9137ft) to Shira I Camp at 3504m (11496ft), covering a distance of 7.9km (5 miles) in 5-6 hours. The path takes you through the last section of rainforest before entering the low alpine moorland zone, eventually reaching the Shira Plateau.

Day 3 involves a 9.8km (6.1 miles) trek from Shira I Camp to Moir Hut, gaining an altitude of 657m. You’ll pass through the “Garden of the Senecios” and the high alpine desert zone, with a stop at Lava Tower and the iconic Shark’s Tooth rock formation at 4600m. After lunch, you’ll join the northern circuit, descending to Moir Camp at 4161m, an essential day for acclimatization as you experience high altitude and then sleep low.

Day 4 sees you climbing from Moir Camp at 4155m to Buffalo Camp at 4033m, losing 122m in altitude. The trek covers 9.2km (5.8 miles) over 5-7 hours, with a moderately steep climb out of Moir Valley, offering stunning vistas of the plains stretching to the Kenyan-Tanzanian border.

On Day 5, you’ll trek from Buffalo Camp at 4033m to Rongai 3rd Cave at 3936m, covering 6.8km (4.3 miles) in 5-7 hours. The route takes you over Buffalo Ridge and down into Pofu Camp, continuing around the northern slopes to Rongai Third Cave, arriving by mid-afternoon.

Day 6 involves a steady 4.8km (3 miles) climb from Rongai 3rd Cave at 3936m to School Hut at 4717m, gaining 781m in altitude. You’ll cross the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi Peak, preparing for your summit attempt.

Day 7 is the pinnacle of your journey, beginning at School Hut at 4717m and ascending to the summit at 5895m, gaining 1178m in altitude over 5.9km (3.7 miles). After reaching the summit, you’ll descend 2068m to Millennium Camp at 3827m, covering 8.4km (5.2 miles). The day involves 6-8 hours of ascent and 4-6 hours of descent, passing through various zones, with incredible views and a brief stay at the summit.

Finally, on Day 8, you’ll descend from Millennium Camp at 3827m to Mweka Gate at 1633m, losing 2194m in altitude over a 9.1km (6 miles) trek. After a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation with your crew, you’ll continue down to Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates before being driven back to your hotel in Moshi.

DAY 2: ARUSHA – TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

We depart from Arusha in the morning and drive to Tarangire National Park. Tarangire is famous for its herds of Elephants and ancient Baobab trees. This park is also well known for its high concentration of game and fantastic bird life. Other animals to be spotted include leopards, giraffes, zebras, lions, etc. We enjoy a game drive until late afternoon and then drive to Karatu for Overnight at Marera Valley Lodge/Bougainvillea Lodge

DAY 3: KARATU TO SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

We depart after breakfast to Serengeti via the Ngorongoro conservation area where we have a picnic lunch. We arrive for an afternoon game drive on the northern side of Serengeti, entering the park. Serengeti offers the most enthralling game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo and wildebeests, groups of elephants and giraffes, eland, impala and Grant’s gazelle, lions, leopards, and many others. DAY 4: FULL GAME DRIVE IN SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Breakfast at around 0800am. Proceed with morning and afternoon game drives in the Serengeti with a lunch and leisure break at the Luxury tented camp in the mid-afternoon. The term Serengeti means endless plains in the Masai language. In the central plains, there are carnivores like leopards, lions, hyenas, and cheetahs. This park is normally the scene of the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra that occurs between the Kenyan Mara and the Serengeti. Varied bird species can be seen here including eagles, ducks, geese, egrets, vultures, secretary birds, ibis, storks, herons, kites, pelicans, cranes, and guinea fowl. The Serengeti National Park is arguably the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world with over 3 million large mammals. About 35 species of plains animals can be seen there including the “big 5” - Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Leopard, and Buffalo. Other common species found here include hippo, giraffe, eland, impala and other antelope types, baboons, monkeys, and a profusion of over 500 species of birds. In May or early June, huge herds of wildebeest, gazelle, and zebra begin their annual spectacular migration northwards. In their wake follow predators, lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs with vultures circling overhead! Come back to the tented camp for dinner and overnight.

DAY 5: SERENGETI, NGORONGORO CRATER TO ARUSHA

After breakfast, with a picnic lunch packed, we depart for a game drive to the Ngorongoro crater. A real-life Eden, you will be amazed by its abundant wildlife that gets very close to the vehicle. The crater floor supports more than 25000 large mammals including the remaining Black Rhinos, Zebras, Gnus, Gazelles, Buffalos, Lions, Hippos, Elephants, Elands, Hyenas, and several aquatic birds. We explore the crater till late afternoon drive back to Arusha and take your flight back to Arusha/ Zanzibar/home.

Baobab is one of the trees with the largest trunks in the world! Its cable stem can reach diameters of more than 10 meters and is capable of storing more than 100,000 litres of water. Their size is so impressive that some baobabs are used as housing, sheds or animal shelters. Unfortunately, the species is endangered.

Baobabs are estimated to live between 1,000 and 3,000 years, depending on their size. Their scientific name is typed Adansonia, but they are also known as baobab, baobab or calabeiras. This tree is truly powerful: it hosts hundreds of animals, birds and insects in its huge trunks. Its flowers, up to 20 cm long, bloom during the night and contain nectar and fruit that are used as food for tribes and animals. In addition, the baobab fruit, rich in vitamin C, has medicinal and dietary uses.

A special oil is extracted from the sap of this tree; the indigenous people of Madagascar build canoes (a kind of long canoe) out of their trunk, and their cork has a medicinal compound to fight epilepsy. No surprise that in Africa baobabs represent life: they're symbols of fertility, abundance and healing. ✨
