A two-day regional workshop on illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in small-scale fisheries is currently underway in Zanzibar.🌊🐟

The workshop, which will run from May 24 to 25, 2023, is organised by WIOMSA and Blue Nature Alliance in collaboration with the Nairobi Convention and the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries of Zanzibar.

The workshop has 30 participants, mostly fisheries managers, enforcement officers, technology experts, and scientists from Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Comoros, Madagascar, and Seychelles.🌍

The workshop aims to improve knowledge exchange and sharing experience on IUU fishing management in WIO small-scale fisheries, as well as to strengthen regional collaboration in sharing information and techniques for combating IUU.

WIOMSA recently completed a study to better understand how people perceive the IUU problem, and the findings of the study will be discussed. Access the study here:

Illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing remains one of the greatest threats to marine ecosystems in Africa. The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is experiencing a remarkable depletion of marine resources and considerable environmental and economic damage due to IUU.
