Now get to learn everything about the cultivation of coffee and the life of a coffee farmer!

Kilimanjaro is coffee country! For a half day excursion, those interested can visit a small-scale coffee farmer on the slopes of the Kili, who will show you everything you need to know about coffee cultivation. You will be taken through all the steps, from planting the seedling to the making of the final cup of delicious hot coffee. Guided by a local farmer, you will witness the whole process of coffee production from bean to cup.

The farmer will also explain to you about organic coffee farming and fair trade standards. The tour includes a locally prepared lunch and a homemade cup of coffee.

The tour was set up by a Dutch development program of sustainable tourism and contributes to income-generation of small-scale coffee farmers, making them less dependent on the fluctuating world market prices for coffee and seasonal effects related to farming.

Coffee from Kilimanjaro is of high quality and is popular worldwide due to its low level of acidity. For Tanzania, the Kilimanjaro coffee is the most important "cash crop" of the country. The town of Moshi in Kilimanjaro is the main hub for the coffee trade. On the plantation that you visit, coffee plants are grown, coffee beans harvested, dried, the beans separated off the undesirable ingredients and bagged. You can participate in all the steps.

Overview
The tour will take 6 hours. Pickup will be arranged in Arusha or Moshi with air-conditioned private vehicle. We will start our tour in Materuni, the last village before Kilimanjaro. The hike up to the Materuni Waterfalls takes about 1 hour. After the hike, we will start our Coffee tour where you will get to see how coffee is processed from harvest to cup. The tour will end with a freshly brewed cup of coffee and a lunch spread of local dishes. Karibu (Welcome!)

Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation

A tour to Materuni Village and Waterfalls is a great way to spend a day away from the bustle of town life. The walk to Materuni Waterfall offers a glimpse into the nature of Tanzania allowing you either to prepare your body for the forthcoming climb to Kilimanjaro or ease your muscles after the climb.

The tour starts with a walk to Materuni Waterfall. It is an opportunity to see how local fruit like avocados, mangos, lemons, and bananas grow, as well as learn some of the local history, traditions, village economy, agricultural and cultural life. When you get to the waterfall, you can refresh yourself in the natural pool, so swimsuits will come in handy!

The tour will continue with a visit to the local village lying in the coffee plantations. The villagers will demonstrate the process of coffee farming and guide you through the preparation of coffee from a bean to a cup. Sing and dance along with the Chaga people as they are grinding, roasting and boiling the beans. When the coffee is ready, villagers will serve lunch - a national Chagga meal.
