The Zanzibar colobus monkeys, also known as Kirks red colobus, belong to the group of red colobus monkeys. They live exclusively on the main island of Zanzibar, Unguja. They are best observed in the Jozani Forest. The monkeys are threatened with extinction. They are thought to be one of the rarest monkey species in Africa.
They live in groups of 30 to 50 animals and feed mainly on leaves and seeds. This makes them extremely important for the ecosystem on Zanzibar, as they help to spread seeds.

With a body size of only 30-40 cm, dikdiks belong to the dwarf antelopes and are not much larger than a full-grown hare due to their small and dainty shape. Dikdiks are common in both southern and eastern Africa and feed mainly on leaves, grasses and fruit. Dikdiks live in monogamous pairs and defend their territory against other pairs. The territories are small, usually only a few hectares in size. They are mainly crepuscular and nocturnal to escape the heat of the day. During the hottest hours of the day they rest in the shade.

Tropical reminiscing on Mafia Island! ☀️
Mafia Island is the perfect way to end after an intensive safari on the mainland of Tanzania. The lilac-breasted roller belongs to the roller family of birds and can be found in sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Its habitat are savannahs and open woodlands, but it cannot be found in treeless areas. What stands out most about the lilac-breasted roller is by far its colour. It has a greenish head, lilac throat and breast, a blue belly and even brighter wing feathers. Both males and females have the same colouration. Like other rollers, lilac-breasted rollers are extremely territorial. They protect their nest fiercely and are not even afraid to chase away raptors. It is said that the lilac-breasted roller is monogamous; pairs build their nests in natural tree holes as well as termite mounds or unoccupied kingfisher and woodpecker nests. Both males and females incubate the two to four eggs, which are laid at a time.

Majestic and proud: A male waterbuck poses during a safari in Tanzania. The waterbuck is a large African antelope species known for its striking white face and curved horns. They mainly live in humid areas such as swamps, riverbanks and wetlands. Waterbucks are excellent swimmers and can flee into the water in case of danger. Male waterbucks are often territorial and aggressively defend their territory against other males. In contrast to the females, the male waterbucks are significantly larger and heavier - they can grow up to 2 metres long and weigh 300 kilograms.

The elegant Grey Crowned Crane is the national bird and national symbol of Uganda. Of course, it also lives in Tanzania and can be spotted in various national parks here. It is one of Africa’s most iconic and striking birds, named due to its crown of yellow feathers, tipped with black. The olive baboon, also called the Anubis baboon, is a member of the family Cercopithecidae Old World monkeys. The species is the most wide-ranging of all baboons, being native to 25 countries throughout Africa, extending from Mali eastward to Ethiopia and Tanzania. The olive baboon is so named for its coat, which is a grey-green color from a distance. Males are larger than females, weighing on average 53 pounds, whereas the female weighs on average 33 pounds.

Tree hyraxes are somehow strange yet beautiful creatures. These animals, which are related to elephants but look more like rodents, move nimbly like monkeys in the treetops and sing with the power of a nightingale. The gerenuk, whose name means “giraffe-necked” in Somali, is an exceptionally long-necked antelope. Their head is small for their size, but their eyes and ears are large. Like many other gazelles, these large antelopes have preorbital glands in front of the eyes that emit a tar-like, scent-bearing substance they deposit on twigs and bushes to mark their territory. They also have scent glands on their knees that are covered by tufts of hair and between their split hooves.
