Changu changu Prison island The island of Changu is about 1 km long and 200 m wide and was once the private residence of a rich Arab who temporarily stored slaves here. ""General Mathews (see "Mathew's House") bought it from him in 1893 and left it out In the 1920s, the island served as a quarantine station for Indian immigrants, after which it remained uninhabited. The old prison, where gnarled branches grow through rusted bars, has survived the years and gives the name "Prison Island" "a special touch. For some, even more interesting than the ruins are the (completely harmless) giant tortoises on the island. Some of them are said to have been "on the shell" for over 200 years, and it is said that a sailor brought a group with him from the Seychelles in the 19th century. However, the condition of the turtles is pitiful, and there is also a fence that is as high as a man, so that they are safe like in the zoo. The $6 entry fee is also excessive. The boat trip to the island takes just under 30 minutes and costs at least $30 (three people or more). However, snorkeling is quite good there (diving goggles and accessories are partly re-registered on the island and included in a lodge that has 27 bungalows (www .privateislands-zanzibar.com).Once a hotel is built, only its guests can enter it.
