Dear Comrades,

While new design of our blog is approaching, we decided to finally get acquainted with you!

Here we are,
Mary
and Eugene
the passionate creators of this page.

The idea to create 'Soviet Kyiv' was born back in 2017, when we projected a guided tour «Nostalgia for Soviet Kyiv» as a part of our studies

Soviet époque has always fascinated us — starting from music that we listened to, finishing with unique architecture of Kyiv, and testimonials of our relatives

So, it took us 4 years to realize that we are crazily (!) excited to share this passion with the World — that's how on 27.04.2021 the 'Soviet Kyiv' was born.

We would like to thank you for your interest in the Soviet period of Kyiv, and for following this blog. That really means a lot for us 🖤⚒️

Nice to meet you and stay tuned, Comrades!

M-2: secrets of the Kyiv metro 👁️‍🗨️

⬇️🇮🇹/🇷🇺⬇️

In many megalopolises the metro is purely utilitarian, but the architectural luxury of some Kyiv stations amazes tourists (see our previous post 👇🏻).

Ⓜ️The governmental metro line in Kyiv is still under secret, however, some sources say that by taking a train in the center of the capital, officials could go 30 kilometers out of Kyiv in less than 20 minutes.

⚒️During the Cold War between the USA and the USSR, the metro functioned as a civil defense facility: practically all old stations are equipped with bomb shelters.

⛲There are fountains with drinking water, toilets and constantly replenishing warehouses with food.

🛑Each station has huge metal sealed gates 30-40 cm thick, which, when closed, are capable of withstanding even a nuclear explosion.

💥In the event of a nuclear war, it was decided to build a three-story command bunker in the very center of Kyiv.

🔒When the main work was completed, the USSR collapsed and the secret construction was forgotten.

💤Escalator handrail tape moves faster than steps to prevent passengers from falling asleep.

🚆The maximum train speed is 80 km/h. But they never accelerate to this. The most optimal is 60 km/h.

🗿The train in the tunnel can stop only because the previous train is delayed due to the fault of slow passengers at the station.

🐀Rats in the tunnels of the Kyiv metro are fiction. Every night the railway lines are washed and vacuumed by the station employees. Therefore, it is even cleaner than in your own apartment.

♂️The drivers of the Kyiv metro are exclusively men. Discrimination? No! This is because such a serious and responsible job requires tremendous resistance to stress, good coordination, quick reaction, and sometimes even physical strength. Therefore, this is an exclusively male profession.

🆙During its existence, the Kyiv Metro has transported over 20 billion passengers. Now remember, how many people live around the globe? Conclusion: our metro (figuratively) has transported all the inhabitants of the planet already three times.

With this we finish our Ⓜ️

Ⓜ️Top 5️⃣ most beautiful stations of the Kiev metroⓂ️
⬇️🇷🇺/🇮🇹⬇️
🤷🏻‍♂️Today it is impossible to imagine the capital without the subway, because the city stops, changes, loses its face. We fully felt it during the quarantine. ❌
💬The idea to create an underground railway in Kyiv was voiced in 1884, but its implementation was delayed until November 6, 1960 🚇
🔔Today, the subway stretches for 70 kilometers, has three operating lines and 52 stations, three of which have received the status of architectural monuments.
🟥The Golden Gate (1-2)🟥
The lobby of the Golden Gate station has been included in the lists of the most beautiful in the world several times.🥇
🎨The interior of the station is decorated with colorful mosaics with images of heroes, episodes from the history and symbols of the times of Kievan Rus.🏰 By the way, they are arranged in chronological order.
Opened on December 31, 1989.
🟧Slavutych (3-4)🟧
Slavutych station is made of white and blue marble with small lamps and aluminum structures in the form of lilies on a black ceiling.🌸 According to the plan of architect Alyoshkin, it should resemble a night over the Dnieper. 🌊 Opened in 1992.
🟨Olympiyska (5-6)🟨
🔥The station lobby is decorated with the composition "Olympic Flame" with rings made of colored smalt. 🔗 Although according to the original design, the rings should not have been, and the walls were planned to be painted white. Opened on December 19, 1981 under the name "Republican Stadium".
🟩Osokorki (7-8)🟩
Earlier, fountains in the form of stones were installed on the platform, but in the early 2000s they were dismantled. ⛲️
🎨Instead, in 2018, as part of the More than us project, the station's lobby was decorated with murals by eight world artists. Opened on December 30, 1992.
🟦Theatralna (9-10)🟦
Previously, the station was called "Leninskaya" and was decorated with the same red marble as the mausoleum of the leader. A bust of Volodymyr Ilyich was placed on the wall, which in 2014 was covered with a 3D image of the theater stage. 🩰
🛠At the same time, the signs with Soviet slogans that were all over the station were removed.🎭 Opened on November 6, 1987.

The deepest metro in the world 😳

⬇️🇮🇹/🇷🇺⬇️

"The metro is for scientists, the tram is for metallurgists" people used to say in Soviet times.

Ⓜ️The Arsenalna station was opened on November 6, 1960, together with four first stations: Vokzalna, Universytet, Khreshchatyk and Dnipro.

🚆The first branch was 5.2 kilometers long. Since 1965, the metro has crossed the Dnipro River, and today its length is almost 60 kilometers. With the prospect of growth, of course.

💡The station is named after the "Arsenal" plant, which produced military equipment.

⬇️According to unofficial data, Arsenalna station is the deepest metro station in the world. It passes through a hill at a depth of about 106 m (120 m in some sources!).
The descent to the platforms on both escalators takes 5 minutes, which is more than a trip from the neighboring station.

⚠️Given the hilly terrain and volatility of the ground around the station, it was decided to freeze them to prevent movement. For this, 400 pipes were installed and filled with liquid nitrogen, which literally froze and immobilized the soil.

📈Escalators have a length of 55.8 and 46.6 m. At that time, escalators more than 60 m were simply not produced. Therefore, it was decided to connect the two escalators with an intermediate hall.

⚒️For the first time in the world’s metro history, a vestibule weighing 3,000 tons was built on the surface, which people nominate as the "giant glass".

😳In less than 4 months, the vestibule reached its depth. The complicated process has almost ended in tragedy. During the descent, the "glass" moved and sowed a sense of despair and fear among the 25 workers who were below.

❔The Arsenalna station was laid in the closest proximity to governmental structures: the Presidential Administration and the Cabinet of Ministers. They say that in the tunnels of the Arsenalna there are secret hiding places for the political elite. Perhaps the former officials were hiding during the Euromaidan 2014?

Ⓜ️And the green color of the letters "M", denoting the entrance to the subway, is typical for Kyiv. In Moscow these letters are red, and in St. Petersburg they are blue.

in Ukraine: forget or remember? 🌟🚫

⬇️ 🇮🇹/🇷🇺 ⬇️

An unofficial decommunization process started in Ukraine in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

📙In the early 90s, the Ukrainian government had issued orders aimed at "de-sovietisation". This process, however, went on more successfully in the Ukrainian-speaking western regions than in the industrialised, Russian-speaking eastern ones.

⛔During 2002-2013, decommunization laws were reviewed by the Parliament a couple of times, but they all failed to materialize.

📖Decommunization was finally formalized in April 2015, when the Ukrainian government approved laws that outlawed communist symbols.

The law applies to:
▫️the Flag of the USSR
▫️the Flags of the UkrSSR and ex-republics
▫️the State Emblem of the USSR
▫️the State Anthem of the USSR
▫️the Red star
▫️the Hammer and Sickle
▫️images resembling Lenin and Stalin
▫️military uniforms

Violation of the law carries a penalty of a potential media ban or/and up to 5 years of imprisonment. This is the price of

❌A set of laws started a six-month period for the removal of communist monuments and renaming of public places named after communist-related themes. At the time, this meant that 22 cities and 44 towns were set to get a new name.

♻️In 2016, 51493 streets were renamed in different Ukrainian cities. In 1991 the country had ~5500 Lenin monuments and ~4000 monuments to other communist figures; in 2015 — a total of 1300.

🔚In February 2019, The Guardian reported that the two Lenin statues in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone were the only two remaining statues of Lenin in Ukraine.

Despite the fact Ukraine was not the only country which introduced bans on the Soviet symbols, the decommunization process has given birth to the spread of radical nationalism and hatred towards our past. What is the situation in your country? Write in the comments ⤵️

The white 'Stonehenge of Lenin' in the center of Kyiv 🗿

⬇️ 🇮🇹/🇷🇺 ⬇️

👁️‍🗨️ In the times of the USSR, all republics' capitals should have had the Lenin Museum.

⚒️ Built in 1978–1982, this monumental marble building was originally erected as a Kyiv affiliate of the All-Union Lenin Museum, displaying materials documenting Lenin's life.

🔎 The interior of the building was designed as a three-dimensional atrium with a 12m high statue of the Leader in the center. The exposition of the Museum operated indoors in 1982-1993.

🇺🇦 On April 2, 1993 the building was renamed as "Ukrainian House" and converted to a conference and exhibition hall. The Lenin museum exhibition was dismounted and placed into storage funds.

💥 In 2014 the House was besieged by Euromaidan protesters. Then it provided a community shelter for fellow civilians and protestors who were engaged in the revolution.

🎭 Nowadays the "Ukrainian House" is known as one of the centers of business, educational, cultural and social life of Ukraine. Annually, popular festivals such as Kyiv Comic Con are held here, along with trade fairs, concerts, educational seminars and symposiums. The hub is managed by the Ukrainian government.

🏛️ Ukrainian House has 5 storeys with fully flexible spaces and halls to fit any needs from small private meetings to large-scale gatherings for up to 3,500 participants. It has all the necessary facilities: exhibition spaces, stage, restaurant and outdoor terraces.

📌 The building is situated on the former Lenin Komsomol's Square (now known as European Square) in the very heart of the Ukrainian capital. It is located just 2 mins far from the main square of the country — Maidan (Independence Square), while other major attractions can be reached out by foot: St. Sophia’s Cathedral, Michael’s Golden Dome Monastery, Andrew’s Descent (Uzviz), Volodymyr Hill and Funicular.
