The Republic of Costa Rica is a unitary independent democratic state. The pride of the people of the country has been the absence of an army for almost 50 years. The head of state and government of Costa Rica is the president. Legislative Assembly is the highest legislative body. The capital is San Jose. Its population exceeds 4.8 million people and continues to grow at a rate of more than 2% a year. A specific national characteristic of Costa Rica, unlike other countries in the region, can be considered a high degree of monolithic ethnic composition of the population - 80% of all residents are natives of Spain, 17% are mestizos, only 2% are African-Americans, brought in the past and early this century from the West Indies, especially from Jamaica, to work on the banana plantations. The indigenous people of this country who once met the ships of Columbus, the Indians who inhabited the swampy coastal lowlands, are now no more than 5,000.
