The reptiles of Uganda can be viewed at Uganda Reptile Village in Entebbe. Species on display include the Gaboon Viper, Forest Cobra, Nile Monitor, Leopard Tortoise and Jacksons Chameleon.

A major function of the village is to educate people so that they overcome a fear of reptiles and take an interest in their conservation.

Come see over 50 reptiles with 20 different species on display from cobras, boomslangs, skinks, monitor lizards, tortoises and the most poisonous snake in Africa the Gaboon Viper. One enclosure is an open basin, as the species hosted there are non-climbing. Another basinis home for four different species of tortoises, your children will love watching these slow but fun animals eat their vegetables. Walking down the gentle slope you will reach the present location of the chameleons. At the end of the compound opens into a swamp area. This swamp is an ideal place for animals like reptiles, birds and monkeys to breed and feed. In the near future we plan to add another enclosure for crocodiles.

Kidepo Valley National Park covering 442 square kilometers is located in the extreme north eastern corner of Uganda.
, Kidepo is one of Africa’s best parks with the most beautiful landscape.

Kidepo National Park has two main biomes; savanna/acacia grassland and semi-arid short grass.

Kidepo Valley National Park supports a wider diversity. Of the 80 mammal species in the park 28 cannot be found in any other park in Uganda including Caracal, Stripped Hyena, Aardwolf, Cheetah, Bat-eared Fox and Hunting dog are carnivore species unique to Karamoja region and protected within Kidepo. Kidepo also harbors 5 species of primate including the Kavirondo Bush Baby which is also unique to the area. The park also has a number of rare ungulates including the Greater and Lesser Kudu, Chandlers Mountain Reedbuck, Klipspringer, Dikdik, Bright Gazelle, Beisa Oryx, and Roan Antelope. Kidepo has unusually small crocodiles with maximum length of 2.5m compared to the Nile crocodiles which regularly exceed 4m. The small size is apparently a result of the limited food availability.

The common animals include Elephants, Zebra, Bush Pigs, Rothschild Giraffes, Eland, Jackson’s Hartebeest, Buffalo, Oribi, Lion, Leopard, Spotted Hyena, Black-backed and Side-backed Jackal. Kidepo is the best park in Africa for great buffalo herds!!

Lake Victoria is one of the African Great Lakes. The lake was renamed after Queen Victoria by the explorer John Hanning Speke, the first Briton to document it in 1858, while on an expedition with Richard Francis Burton.

With a surface area of approximately 59,947 km2 Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake by area, the world's largest tropical lake, and the world's second-largest fresh waterlake by surface area after Lake Superiorin North America.

The lake includes many species of fish that inhabit nowhere else, especially cichlids. Invasive fish, such as the Nile perch, have driven many endemicspecies to extinction.

Many mammal species live in the region of Lake Victoria, and some of these are closely associated with the lake itself and the nearby wetlands. Among these are the hippopotamus, African clawless otter, spotted-necked otter, marsh mongoose, sitatunga, bohor reedbuck, defassa waterbuck, cane rats, and giant otter shrew.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level (Mauna Kea measured from the sea floor is higher) in the world: 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level and about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) above its plateau base. It is the highest volcano in Africa and the Eastern Hemisphere.

Kilimanjaro has a succession of vegetation zones consisting of (from base to summit) the semiarid scrub of the surrounding plateau; the massif’s cultivated, well-watered southern slopes; dense cloud forest; open moorland; alpine desert; and moss and lichen communities. Two notable species that grow in the moorlands are the giant lobelia (Lobelia deckenii) and the giant groundsel (Senecio johnstonii cottonii). The forests of the southern slopes and surrounding areas are home to elephants, buffalo, and eland (oxlike antelopes). Smaller mammals inhabiting the forests include black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and bushbuck and duikers (small African antelopes). The forests also host a rich variety of birdlife, including the rare Abbot’s starling.

The famous
Maasai Mara,
is a large national game reserve in Narok, Kenya, contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is named in honor of the Maasai people, the ancestral inhabitants of the area, who migrated to the area from the Nile Basin. Their description of the area when looked at from afar: "Mara" means "spotted" in the local Maasai language, due to the many short bushy trees which dot the landscape.

Maasai Mara is one of the most famous and important wildlife conservation and wilderness areas in Africa, world-renowned for its exceptional populations of lion, African leopard, cheetah and African bush elephant. It also hosts the Great Migration, which secured it as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, and as one of the ten Wonders of the World.

The Greater Mara ecosystem encompasses areas known as the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the Mara Triangle, and several Maasai Conservancies, including Koiyaki, Lemek, Ol Chorro Oirowua, Mara North, Olkinyei, Siana, Maji Moto, Naikara, Ol Derkesi, Kerinkani, Oloirien, and Kimintet.

Mount Elgon is a massive solitary volcanic mountain on the border of eastern Uganda and western Kenya. Its vast form, eighty kilometers in diameter, rises 3070m above the surrounding plains, providing welcome relief in more than one sense of the word. Its mountainous terrain introduces variety to an otherwise monotonous regional landscape. Its cool heights offer respite for humans from the hot plains below and its higher altitudes provides a refuge for flora and fauna.

this extinct volcano is one of Uganda's oldest physical features, first erupting around 20 million years ago. It was once Africa's highest mountain, towering above Kilimanjaro's 5895m. Millennia of erosion have reduced its height to 4321m, relegating it to 4th highest peak in East Africa (and 7th on the continent). However, its 4000km2 surface area is still the largest base of any volcanic mountain worldwide

ACTIVITIES

Hiking,its spectacular scenery,
mountain Elgon area also offers to sight a variety of unique forest monkeys and small antelopes, along with huge elephants and buffaloes.
The unique Sipi waterfalls, ancient enormous stone age cave paintings close to the Budadiri trail head, the scenic mountain peaks, the hot springs that bubble up at 4800c and gorges are to mention but some of the thrilling attraction the Elgon area has to offer .
With a checklist topping up to 300 birdsbirding safari tourists have many bird species not recorded elsewhere in Uganda to see, plus unique hot springs within her crater, mountain biking trails, Elgon is indeed a great Africa tour destination!!

Lake Mburo National Park

is a very special place; every part of it is alive with variety, interest and colour. It contains an extensive area of wetland and also harbours several species of mammals and birds found nowhere else in Uganda. Its sculptured landscape, with rolling hills and idyllic lake shores has a varied mosaic of habitats; forest galleries, seasonal and permanent swamps, rich acacia-woodland and grassy valleys which all support a wealth of wildlife.

Lake Mburo is the only park in Uganda with eland, impala and klipspringer. It is also home to the largest population of zebra in Uganda estimated at about 5,000 and probably contains the highest concentration of leopard found anywhere in Uganda. Buffalo, waterbuck, topi and warthog are also very common. Reedbuck and oribi can also be spotted in the open valleys. Hyena, genet, bush pigs and white tailed mongoose are often seen on night game drives.

At the centre of the Park is Lake Mburo, which together with 14 other lakes in the area, forms part of a wetland system. This system is linked by a swamp some 50 km long, fed by the Ruizi River on the western side. Five lakes, of which the largest is Lake Mburo, occur within the Park's boundary.

Almost a fifth of the Park's area consists of wetlands - both seasonally flooded and permanent swamps. The various types of swamps are home to a wide variety of wetland birds, as well as the shy, rare sitatunga antelope. Lake Mburo 's surface and its fringing vegetation are always changing, and it is delightful to take a boat out and experience the lake's moods and watch the numerous hippos, some crocs and an incredible amount of African fisheagles. The lake is also one of the best places to spot the rarely seen African finfoot and white backed heron amongst many other water birds.

Murchison Falls National Park is best known, though, for the most powerful waterfall in the world. Every second, the equivalent of 200 bathtubs full of water is forced through a gorge less than seven paces wide. The pressure is so great that the ground trembles around it. The water then plummets 43 meters before flowing out toward Lake Albert as a placid river whose banks are dense with hippos, crocodiles, waterbuck and buffaloes.

Murchison Falls, the most powerful waterfall in the world.

Murchison Falls is just one part of the 384,000-hectare Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP), established in 1952 and now the largest and most-visited national park in Uganda. The Victoria Nile runs through it, its wide, white rapids flanked by riverine forest and rust-red cliffs. Safari-goers from all over the world motor across the savannas and woodlands that straddle the river. Overhead, vibrant hot-air balloons carrying tourists float like a dream through the dawn mist.

Uganda kob is one of several endangered species that call Murchison Falls NP home.

With the thrum of the Falls as the bassline, everything is set to the East African soundtrack: the rumble of an elephant, the honk-grunt of a hippo, the trill of a fish eagle, the breathy call of a leopard like a saw on wood.

The beautiful Sipi falls with 3 water falls.
Sipi Falls lies at an altitude of 1,775 metres. The hikes can be difficult and muddy, but they’re deserving of your energy.

When you stop to look at the beauty of the falls, you’ll forget about your aching feet and mud-stained trousers. To hike all three falls, it’ll take you roughly 3 hours.

Sipi Falls is captivating, and there’s plenty to get up to after you finish your hike.

For the thrill-seekers in the group, you can do rock climbing or abseiling in the region.

In the surrounding caves, you'll find the Nyero rock paintings. The paintings are believed to date back to the year 1250 and are considered the most important rock art in Uganda.

For keen birdwatchers, there are over 275 species of birds. Or, if you want to fish, you can catch some mountain trout with the help of a guide.

A great excursion is to wander down to the local village and meet the Sabiny people to learn more about their way of life, dress codes, and traditional dances

Ruwenzori Range, mountain range bordering Uganda and Congo (Kinshasa); the range is thought to be the “Mountains of the Moon” described by the 2nd-century-AD geographer Ptolemy(Claudius Ptolemaeus). The mountains were long thought to be the source of the Nile.

Dwelling in the mountains of the Ruwenzori Range, western Uganda.

Dylan Walters

Lying slightly north of the Equator, the Ruwenzori Range has a maximum breadth of 30 miles (50 km) and extends south-north for 80 miles (130 km) between Lake Edward and Lake Albert. The Ruwenzori Range falls steeply westward to the Western Rift Valley, while its descent to the east is more gradual, leading to the uplands of the western part of Uganda. Unlike most African snow peaks, the Ruwenzori is not of volcanic origin but is a gigantic horst of six separate glaciated masses, reaching a high point in Mount Stanley at Margherita Peak(16,795 feet [5,119 m]). The Ruwenzori Range’s largest mountains are separated by passes and deeply cut river valleys that all eventually drain into the Semliki River. Glaciers and small lakes occur in the upper valleys. The permanent snow line stands at about 14,800 feet (4,511 m) on the east and 15,900 feet (4,846 m) on the west. The mountain summits are often hidden in cloud cover, created periodically by moist airstreams from the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Queen Elizabeth (Ruwenzori) National Park (established 1952) is located east of Lake Edward and south of the Ruwenzori Range in southwestern Uganda.

The Ruwenzori is economically important for copper and cobalt deposits, mined at Kilembe, Uganda. Hydropower for mining is provided by the Mubuku, the range’s largest river. The Amba and Konjo peoples of the lower eastern slopes are mainly cultivators of beans, sweet potatoes, and bananas.

Mountain climbing
Bird watching
