The Shoebill (aka Whale-head, aka shoe-billed Stork, aka Balaeniceps rex) is a large wading waterbird that stalks the marshes of tropical East Africa in South Sudan and Uganda. It stalks along the swampy Nile River and Lake Victoria shores, snatching up prey with its unique, immediately recognizable bills. The shoebill is one of the five most desirable birds in Africa by birdwatchers.

The Batwa people of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest practice deep listening, an almost spiritual skill, based on respect. Sometimes called 'Omugano', deep listening is inner, quiet, still, awareness, waiting – and these cultural experiences are dying to the modern world. Our visits into the Batwa villages give us a tiny glimpse of what will have disappeared in the future.
Add the Batwa cultural experience on your trip to see gorillas in Bwindi. It's also the most rewarding way to give sustainable support to local communities.

#worldlionday Meet Bucherman 💕 🦁
It would seem lions would be the apex predators in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda, but it's the wire snares of illegal human hunters that are the cruelest killers. Rangers collect thousands each year, but they can't keep up with a practice rampant in parks across Africa.
Like 'Butcherman,' a snare cost him his left hind leg, yet this big-hearted lion still remained king of his pride for three years and sired many cubs
Because of poaching and habitat loss, there are now only half as many lions in Africa as there were 27 years ago when the lion king premiered in theaters.
Happy World Lions Day to all lions, conservationists, and lion fans! ❤

Infant gets quick gentle lessons in chest-beating 😀❤
Mother takes her infant to silverback for babysitting and the silverback, without leaving his comfort, takes the baby through quick chest-thumping lessons. What a sight 🥰
Male gorillas, whether silverbacks or subordinates, will cuddle infants, play with them, welcome them into their nests, and just plain hang out with them. Like babysitting with humans.
They’re incredibly tolerant. Contrary to the typical portrait of male gorillas as aggressive, chest-thumping animals, they can be very gentle or even loving.
Even males that aren’t interested will let infants climb on their back or sit under them while eating. They’ll let the infants do things to them that they wouldn’t let even a subadult get away with.
It’s certainly not the stereotypical image you have of male mountain gorillas.

Dad...wake up and play 🤩🥰
Those lazy Sunday mornings when you just want to stay in, but the kids won't allow it.
Twibuke, the silverback, won't enjoy those lazy luxuries this morning. Wake up and play papa!

With exciting African wildlife watching in arm's reach of the capital, the 370-sq-km Lake Mburo National Park is an increasingly common stop on the safari circuit. It’s the only place in southern Uganda to see zebras and the only park in the country with impalas, slender mongoose, and giant bush rats. You can also look for hyenas, leopards, topis, elands, and recently reintroduced Rothschild's giraffes. Lions are rarely sighted – it's thought there's only one left here. Few big predators means there are horse-riding and mountain-biking opportunities.
