That moment when you meet the silverback .....
Suddenly, a massive dark-furred body appeared directly in front of us, barely noticeable among a thick dark bush, perhaps ten feet away. The silverback paused, lifted his head, and looked peaceably in our direction as he inspected his guests. He unmistakably looked patriarchal, with facial features sharp and compact, his body alert like a warning for us to behave as expected while visiting. He seemed to pick me out of the pack, we locked eyes.

We hike for a few hours through steep but beautiful countryside to get to the Christmas Family of gorillas. Infant gets quick gentle lessons in chest-beating 😀❤ Mother takes her infant to silverback for babysitting and the silverback, without leaving his comfort, takes the baby through quick chest-thumping lessons. What a sight 🥰 Male gorillas, whether silverbacks or subordinates, will cuddle infants, play with them, welcome them into their nests, and just plain hang out with them. Like babysitting with humans. They’re incredibly tolerant. Contrary to the typical portrait of male gorillas as aggressive, chest-thumping animals, they can be very gentle or even loving. Even males that aren’t interested will let infants climb on their back or sit under them while eating. They’ll let the infants do things to them that they wouldn’t let even a subadult get away with. With exciting African wildlife watching in arm's reach of the capital, the 370-sq-km Lake Mburo National Park is an increasingly common stop on the safari circuit. It’s the only place in southern Uganda to see zebras and the only park in the country with impalas, slender mongoose, and giant bush rats.
