AKIIKI'S 10 DAYS UGANDA BIRDING SAFARI
This 10 days trip is one of the most interesting for our kin birding clients as most of the locations are Ecological hot-spots and relatively within the Albertine Rift valley which is not only uganda but Africa's richest zone for most endemic birds and other animals.
Day 1:
Arrival at Entebbe and birding mabamba swamp.
On arrival, you will be received by our representative, your driver/ guide who will give you a briefing about your birding safari and then go birding at mabamba swamp ( depending on the time of your arrival ). The birds to look out for are the shoebill, Great white and Pink backed pelicans, Grey Crowned Crane, Grey parrots, African and Lesser Jacana, baglafecht, black headed and Northern masked weaver. We also expect to see African fish Eagle, swamp flycatcher, African pigmy goose, yellow billed dark, yellow throated Green bull, Great Blue and Ross's Turraco. We later check in to the services of Airport link Guesthouse.
Day 2:
Birding to Ziwa Rhino sanctuary - Masindi.
After breakfast, we drive towards Ziwa Rhino sanctuary, passing through Luwero with chances of seeing hooded vulture, Black kite, Marabou stork, White crested helmet shrike, Northern puffback, piapiac and blue eared starling. Also expect the crowned Hornbill, Meyer's parrot, Abyssinian Roller and Diederic cuckoo. Do Rhino tracking expedition in Ziwa, later lunch break and in the evening check into the services of Masindi kolping hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 3:
Whole day birding in the Royal Mile.
We will have an early morning breakfast and with our packed lunch, drive to one of Uganda's birding hot spots. This is historically known to have been a leisure hunting spot for the traditional king of Bunyoro hence deriving it's name. It's a very rewarding birding area of as we will be birding along the sides of the main trail, inside this tropical rain forest. Here we expect to encounter specialities that include; yellow crested and brown eared wood pe**er, puvel's illadopsis, African pigmy and chocolate backed kingfisher, Forest Robin, Yellow footed and forest flycatcher. Also the Yellow-browed camaroptera, Green crombec, Jameson's and Chestnut wattle eye, Black headed Oriole, Black and White casqued Hornbill among others. We later go back to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4:
Birding towards Murchison falls National Park.
After the morning breakfast with our packed lunch, we will check out and start birding towards Murchison falls National Park. This is uganda's largest conservation area covering 3894 km sq, protecting about 78 mammal species and 450 bird species within its wide variety of habitats like wetlands, Savannah, woodland, Marsh, acquatic and forest habitats. Here, we are likely to encounter the ; Bat hawk, little Sparrow hawk, Bruce's green pigeon, Heuglin's Francolin, Black bellied and Denham's Bustard, white crested Turraco, Blue spotted wood dove, swallow tailed, Red-throated, and Madagascar bee-eaters, brown crested alethe, rock pranticole, Marsh Tchagra and many others. We later check in to the services of Fort Murchison for dinner and overnight.
Day 5:
Birding in Murchison falls national Park - Boat cruise.
After an early breakfast, we start our birding activity towards the Delta area. Here the big game includes; elephants, buffaloes, kobs, waterbucks, giraffes, warthogs, Jackson's Hartbeast, Oribis, Patas monkeys, Lions, Leopards among others.
We also expect to encounter bird specialities that include; Denham's Bustard, Abyssinian Ground hornbill, Sparrow weavers, Black headed lapwing, Foxy cisticola, Black lored and Arrow marked Barbler, Northern Camine, swallow tailed and Red-throated bee-eaters, Red necked falcon, Martial eagle, Fulvous whisting duck and many more.
We have lunch and go for afternoon boat cruise on the Nile towards the bottom of the falls. This provides us with yet another but different wildlife viewing from a close range as they come to cool off on the showers of this mighty river. The cruise takes 3 hours, then come back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 6:
Murchison falls - Kibale national Park.
After an early breakfast with our packed lunch, we will transfer to kibale. This drive takes us through Bulisa escarpment along the Albertine rift valley with good views of lake Albert. It also takes us through hoima, rolling hills of kagadi and beautiful tea plantations of fort portal. Today we have some bit of driving with less birding along the way. But we might encounter some species like Rufous Sparrow, foxy cisticola, papyrus gonolek, White winged warbler, Black billed barbet among others. We arrive at Kibale national Park in early evening and check in to the service of kibale Forest camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 7:
Birding Kibale and Bigodi Wetland.
The day begins early with breakfast to kibale Forest that has about 335 recorded species. This park is also home to a community of more than 1000 chimpanzees and about 12 other primates. So, here we include for specialities that include the Green Breasted Pitta, olive and Afep pigeon, Black bee-eater, yellow rumped tinkerbird plus the African crowned eagle, Fairy breasted, yellow spotted and yellow billed barbet, Honey guide Greenbull, purple headed and Chestnut winged starling, Dusky long tailed cuckoo, Red headed Blue bill, Scaly illadopsis, among others. We go back to the camp, have lunch and later in the afternoon, go for a nature walk/ birding in the Bigodi Wetland. Here we may have chances for the Buff-spotted and Brown-eared wood pe**er, shining blue kingfisher, papyrus gonolek, Great Blue Turraco, white tailed ant thrush, Green backed twinspot and white spotted flufftail. We later go back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 8:
Birding as we transfer to Semuliki National Park.
After breakfast with our packed lunch, we start birding towards Semuliki National Park which also lays in the Albertine rift valley and it's an Eastern extension of the great Ituri forest from Eastern Congo. Today we expect to see the Western Bronze-napped pigeon, spot breasted ibis, Northern bearded scrub Robin, orange cheeked waxbill, Grant's Bluebill, Black bellied seedcracker, white thighed and piping hornbill, shining blue and chocolate backed kingfisher and yellow throated cuckoo. Check in to service of Bumaga camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 9:
Birding along kirumya trail in Semuliki National Park.
After an early breakfast, with our packed lunch. We start a whole day birding activity along the kirumya trail. Today we expect to see African piculet, fire crested alethe, lyre-tailed, spotted and zenker's honeyguide, yellow throated cuckoo, yellow throated nicator, capuchin Barbler, swamp palm Bulbul,simple Greenbull, Red billed helmet shrike, Pale fronted negrofinch, Red tailed Bristlebill, Ituri Batis, white throated blue swallow, red thighed Sparrow hawk among others. We go back to the camp for evening and overnight.
Day 10:
Transfer to Entebbe - Departure
After breakfast, we embark on the road passing through mubende and mityana towns. We arrive at Entebbe in late afternoon and drive straight to the airport for your flight back home ( Depending on the time of your flight ).
