If you have ever visited Uganda Railway museum , walked or driven along Jinja City main street, you might have come across an iconic artifact shown in photo 01 and 02.

Many of you have been referring to it as "a gigantic water tap " . Yes, you might have guessed right but;

What exactly is this?

How important was it during the historic Uganda Railway?

The artifact is called a water column. The early trains worked on steam and this required water.

Every section of track would have a water column, water would be pumped from the water column into the steam locomotive as shown in photo 03 then steam would be generated to run the locomotive

Many precious Railway artifacts and incredible stories of Uganda Railway are preserved at the Uganda Railway museum situated at Jinja railway Station along Jinja _ iganga highway just 2km from Jinja City.

A Dura river cycle๐Ÿ“ท constructed during the extension of Uganda Railway to Kasese, 1956.

The 208mile line from Kampala to Kasese took five years to be built, although there were grand schemes to build such a line since 1910s, the decision reflected the opening of the copper mines at kilembe in the Rwenzori mountains.
This intiative was also linked to the development of the copper smelter inJinja City . Copper ores could then be transported by trains fromKasese District to Jinja where a copper smelter was built .
The 40 miles of this Dura river cycle made the construction very expensive in part because altitude differences of Kasese required a spiral .

Join us as we reflect and celebrate the contribution of Uganda Railway to the social, economic, and political development of Uganda.

Semie lwakilenzi Kakngulu, a born of Kooki around 1870 who grew up as a page at Kabaka's palace in Buganda is one of the great men to be remembered in the history of Uganda most especially when it came to the extension of in Eastern Uganda to collect cotton and coffee from the region.

With the growing influence of the missionaries at Kabaka's Court, he found himself so close with the British.

His managerial talents were needed by the British to supervise the construction of the Busoga railway line.

Kakngulu planted many mivule trees and mango trees along roads and at railway stations which we can still see in Eastern Uganda

Did you know that Kisumu was first named port Florence?

When Uganda Railway had reached the present day Kisumu in 1901, the last nail to the railway sleeper was driven in by Lady Florence Preston, the wife to Ronald Preston, an engineer working on Uganda Railway. So the place became to be known as Port Florence๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š.

The port played a crucial role as the gateway to the interior of East Africa facilitating the movement of people and merchandise within the region.

The place was later renamed Kisumu a luo word meaning "a place of barter trade" . The name change reflected the city's growing importance as a trading and commercial Center.
