Using tracks and signs is great way to build up anticipation en route to a sighting. While these tracks and signs may be obvious/normal to you, they are new to your guests and will help to create excitement for the sighting ahead!

Here are the factors to consider when identifying tracks, firstly always look type of tracks-

•Cloven (split) hoof- eg all antelope, giraffes.

•Uncloven hoof - eg Zebra

•Paws with Claws- eg wilddogs etc, here you can look at the position of nails, length of the nails from the toes.

•Paws without claws- eg lions

•Others- these are distinctive prints which are unlikely to be confused with something else eg- elephants, hippo, rhino and apes.

REMEMBER- Always explain to guests how you reach your conclusions in identifying tracks.

The importance of delivering a successful and enjoyable game drive or bush walk can not be over-emphasized. This is a really reason why tourists have come to Africa, Elegant and upmarket hotels and accommodation are available almost anywhere in the world. Tourists have chosen to come to your lodge to see and experience Africa game and the Africa environment.

This is the arena where you will have the opportunity to put into practice all you have learnt and impact your accumulated knowledge. If the drive or walk is uncomfortable, your opportunity will be lost.

NB-Always be aware of the tourists expectations, aspirations and experience.
Make sure to enjoy yourself as well. If you don’t enjoy the drive or walk, neither will your guests.

While all species have a critical role to play in the ecosystems in which they live, there are some species whose influence in their ecosystems is much greater than would be expected based simply on their abundance.
These animals are known as keystone species, named because of the keystone in an arch-there is only one stone (relatively non-abundant) but if the keystone is removed, the entire arch (i.e. ecosystem) collapses.
One type of keystone species is an ecosystem engineer.

An Ecosystem engineer- is any organism that creates, significantly modifies, maintains or destroys its habitat, and is considered a kind of keystone species.
The elephants is an excellent example of an ecosystem engineer from the savanna, as it regularly pushes over larger trees and eats young saplings, making room for the grass species.
Without elephants, much of the savanna would be in a woodland state, so they quite dramatically alter their habitat and therefore the habitats for many other species.
An ecosystem engineer need not be relatively non-abundant as it typical for a keystone species.
