Akampene Island/Punishment Island

Akampene Island is known as the punishment island and is the most visited among the 29 islands of Lake Bunyonyi and the smallest of all. It’s one of those without human settlements because of the history of tradition behind it.

Though the tradition has now been modernized, historically it was an island where they used to punish teenage girls who would get pregnant out of wedlock, also if any girl was found pregnant they would be taken to that island and be left there, as the culture norm during those days.

Due to that practice of torturing young pregnant girls, it led to many deaths because they would lack what to eat and die at the island.

Now days the modernization was adopted, the young pregnant girls are no longer taken at the island as a punishment, currently you go to the island to visit.

Giraffes are the tallest mammals on Earth. They can run as fast as 35 miles an hour, and their long legs give them a graceful appearance that makes them seem almost like dancers.

In Uganda, you can find them in savanna parks like Murchison Falls and Lake Mburo National Parks. Giraffes are herbivores and eat leaves and stems of trees, shrubs and other plants. They have four stomachs which helps them digest tough plant matter. Their tongues are very long (18 inches or 46 cm) and they chew their food slowly to make sure they get all the nutrients they need from it.

The giraffe's neck is too short to reach the ground, so they feed by standing on their hind legs - this is called "browsing" or "grazing." It's also how they drink - they bend down to reach water sources with their tongue!
