The Karamojong Manyattas - Homesteads of the Karamajong people of North-Eastern Uganda 🇺🇬

These homesteads with small huts surrounded by sharp thorns with large entries for cattle and smaller ones for humans house multiple families and their cattle are kept in a communal space.

Men mainly stay in the kraals during the dry season to protect the cattle and keep migrating towards water sources to sustain their livestock while the women and children remain in the Manyattas.

The Karamajong homesteads are a great tourist attraction offering cultural experiences that have been preserved for generations and not eroded by civilization.

If you’re looking for cultural experiences that can’t be found anywhere else in the world, look no further than Karamoja.
Let us organise unforgettable safaris for you.

17/06/2024

Lake Bunyonyi is located in southwestern Uganda, just a few kilometers from Kabale town and is the only lake shared by Kabale and Rubanda Districts.

Formed by volcanic activity, Lake Bunyonyi is a lava dammed lake resulting from the emergence of lava flows that blocked the outlet of the Ndego River in Muko Subcounty.

It holds the distinction of being the deepest lake in Uganda and the second deepest in East Africa after Lake Tanganyika, with a depth estimated at 900 meters. However, ongoing soil erosion and farming practices along the lake's shores have gradually reduced its depth over time.

Lake Bunyonyi boasts 29 picturesque islands, each with its own unique history. Notable islands include Punishment Island, Chameleon Island, Leprosy Island and Upsidedown Island.

Renowned as a sanctuary for numerous bird species, Lake Bunyonyi hosts over 200 types of birds, with concentrations found particularly around Bushara Island, Nyombe, Skeleton Hill and Kubankari.

One of Lake Bunyonyi's unique features is its safety for swimming, as it is free from bilharzia and dangerous aquatic animals.

The area around Lake Bunyonyi is experiencing development, with nearly 250 resorts and campsites now catering to visitors. Notable accommodations include Bunyonyi Overland Resort, Birdnest Resort, Bunyonyi Safaris Resort, Hawks Eye Resort, Paradise Eco Hub Resort, Bushara Island Campsite, Arcadia Lodges and Bunyonyi Eco Resort Kyahugye.

This beautiful lake continues to evolve, offering an array of experiences for tourists, from boat cruises to guided tours, ensuring that visitors' needs are well met.

How Animal Lovers Can Do Good for Uganda by Booking a Gorilla Trek!

Thirty years since gorilla tourism first began in Uganda, the impact has been tremendous! Funds from these incredible treks directly contribute to conservation efforts, community development, and the preservation of Uganda’s natural resources. Let’s dive into this success story!

Gorillas in the Wild

Mountain gorillas, found only in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, thrive in their natural habitats. They can’t survive in captivity, so trekking helps protect these magnificent creatures while giving travelers a unique, up-close experience. 🦍💚

The History of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

In 1991, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was established as a sanctuary for mountain gorillas. The Mubare group was the first family to call Bwindi home, with some members still there today! Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, the first vet for the Uganda Wildlife Authority, has played a key role in protecting these primates. She even founded the Conservation Through Public Health organization, promoting co-existence between humans and wildlife. 🌿🐾

The Trekking Experience

From Bwindi to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, trekking involves hiking through dense forests and rugged terrain. Tourists can purchase permits to observe these beautiful creatures, sharing just over 98% of their DNA with us! The treks help ensure gorillas’ privacy and freedom, with only an hour spent watching them to minimize disruption. 🏞️👣

Celebrating Success

Gorilla populations have grown from 270 in 1993 to an estimated 500+ today! While still endangered, their future looks hopeful thanks to these conservation efforts. Lilly Ajarova, chief executive of the Uganda Tourism Board, invites everyone to join in celebrating this milestone and experience the wonder of Uganda’s gorillas. 🦍🎉

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Size: 33.7km2, making it Uganda’s smallest National Park.

The park takes its name from “Gahinga” – the local word for the piles of volcanic stones cleared from farmland at the foot of the volcanoes.

The British administration declared the area a game sanctuary in 1930; it was gazetted as a National Park in 1991.

Mgahinga has one habituated transboundary gorilla group.

The Batwa were self-sufficient – and visitors can see how during a fascinating tour with a Batwa guide to learn the secrets of the forest.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits high in the clouds, at an altitude of between 2,227m and 4,127m. As its name suggests, it was created to protect the rare mountain gorillas that inhabit its dense forests, and it is also an important habitat for the endangered golden monkey.

As well as being important for wildlife, the park also has a huge cultural significance, in particular for the indigenous Batwa pygmies. This tribe of hunter-gatherers was the forest’s “first people”, and their ancient knowledge of its secrets remains unrivaled.

Mgahinga’s most striking features are its three conical, extinct volcanoes, part of the spectacular Virunga Range that lies along the border region of Uganda, Congo, and Rwanda. Mgahinga forms part of the much larger Virunga Conservation Area which includes adjacent parks in these countries. The volcanoes’ slopes contain various ecosystems and are biologically diverse, and their peaks provide a striking backdrop to this gorgeous scenery.

Mgahinga boasts of over 76 mammals which include elephants, giant forest hog, bush pigs, bush back. Buffalos, leopards, A bird checklist of over 180 species including the 14 endemic Albertine rift notably the Kivu ground thrush and turaco.
