EXCITING NEWS: African Painted Dogs (commonly called Wild Dogs) which went extinct in Uganda in the 1980’s were sighted this morning around the Narus River in Kidepo Valley National Park. One of our resident rangers captured these images hastily before the pair skipped out of view.

Like is their scientific name (Lycaon pictus) these animals have an irregular, mottled coat, which features patches of red, black, brown, white, and yellow fur. Each animal has its own unique coat pattern, and all have big, rounded ears.

These long-legged canines have only four toes per foot, unlike other dogs, which have five toes on their forefeet.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports that the population level of African wild dogs fluctuates but is in a likely irreversible decline, which is why it considers this to be an endangered species that must be protected.

Tomorrow our teams in the field will head out to track them, to collect some data vital for conservation. Hopefully we can get you some better images too.

Golden Monkey Tracking In Uganda
Mgahinga National Park offers the chance to track the golden monkeys (Ceropithecus Kandti) sometimes referred to as a distinctive race of the more widespread blue monkey C.mitis), a little known bamboo-associated taxa primate listed as ‘endangered’ by the World Conservation Union. Endemic to the Albertine Rift, the golden monkey is characterized as a bright orange-gold body, cheeks and tail, contrasting with its black limbs, crown and tail end.

Golden Monkeys Until a few years ago, this pretty monkey was common in Rwanda’s Gishwati Forest Reserve, most of which was chopped down by returned refugees in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide and unconfirmed sources indicate that a small population might occur further south in the same country’s Nyungwe Forest National Park. Fortunately, the golden monkey is the numerically dominant primate within this restricted range – a 2003 survey estimated a population of 3,000 – 4,000 in Mgahinga National Park.

These primates are endangered and endemic to this region, sharing their home with the world famous Mountain Gorilla, as well as buffalo, forest elephant and other species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. In the beginning and for many months to follow it was very difficult to even find the monkeys owing to the fact that unlike gorillas they are small, do not make nests and leave little evidence of their presence on the forest floor, and at times can be quiet especially in the presence of their main predator the eagle. Also not been used to us they would just run away.

White water Rafting in Uganda
White Water Rafting on River Nile is a top-notch activity to do in Jinja City. The stretch of rapids along the upper Nile near Jinja is considered one of the most spectacular places in Africa to go white-water rafting. Despite the intensity of some of the rapids (grade IV and V), most people who venture here are first-time rafters seeking an adrenaline rush as part of their tour in Uganda.

The waters of the Nile flow from Lake Victoria at Jinja, Uganda, as the White Nile River before its 4,200-mile journey to the Mediterranean Sea. BEST TIME TO VISIT UGANDA.
The best time to visit Uganda is during its two dry seasons: between December and February, and between June and August, when conditions are particularly good for trekking to see mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.

Game spotting in national parks is also good at this time, as well as between February and March. Large numbers of wildlife can be seen at waterholes from September through to early October.

Temperatures barely change throughout the seasons, sitting around 24°C to 30°C, so you can visit Uganda all year round. The country is also fabulous for bird spotting at any time of year.

Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls found at the foothills of Mountain Elgon just at the edge of Mount Elgon National Park near the Kenyan border. They are considered a tourist attraction by the locals, accounting for 10-20% of all tourists visiting Uganda every year. Even so, the government has chronically under-invested in the area.The falls are surrounded by caves and hiking trails.
The falls are located 2 miles northeast of the town of Sipi and 170 miles from the capital Kampala. The falls are formed by the Sipi River, flowing from the upper slopes of Mount Elgon and terminate in the Kyoga Basin.
The name Sipi probably derives from the local word sep, a name for a wild banana-like indigenous plant that grows along the banks of the river. The plant has a translucent, green frond with a bolt of crimson rib that resembles a wild banana.

When is the Best Time to Visit Uganda?

The best time to visit Uganda is between its two dry seasons: December to February and between June and August. These times are the best for trekking to see mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. Game viewing in Uganda's savannah parks is best at the end of the dry seasons – February and March and September/early October – when wildlife is concentrated around water sources.

Kibale Forest Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) offers the chance to spend a half-day or full-day in the presence of the chimpanzees in Kibale Forest.

Habituation is the process of slowly introduction chimpanzees to humans so that they become more comfortable with their presence. In time, these groups of chimp can be tracked as part of a standard chimpanzee trek. The habituation process also gives the rangers a chance to learn more about the chimpanzee's behaviour.

The entire process takes at least three years to complete. Joining the habituation team is once-in-a-lifetime experience, you'll learn a lot more about the chimps than on a standard trek, but it does require patience.
