Mount Muhabura, also known as Mount Muhavura, is an inactive volcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and Uganda. At 4,127 metres (13,540 ft) Muhabura is the third highest of the eight major mountains of the mountain range, which is a part of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. Its summit contains a small crater lake. The limited evidence for this volcano suggests that it last erupted some time in the Holocene, but the exact date is not known. Muhabura is partly in the Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda and partly in the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda

Fact about elephants!!

1. African elephants are the largest of all land animals, adult males weighing between 1,800 and 6,300 kg.

2. Females are smaller, weighing between 2,700 and 3,600 kg.

3. Both male and female African elephants have tusks that grow from deciduous teeth called tushes, which are replaced by tusks when calves are about one year old.

4. The tusks weigh from 23 to 45 kg and can be from 1.5 to 2.4 m (5–8 ft) long. They are curved forward and continue to grow throughout the elephant's lifetime.

5. The dental formula is 1.0.3.3/0.0.3.3
× 2 = 26.

6. Elephants have four molars; each weighs about 5 kg and measures about 30 cm (12 in) long.

7. Elephants replace their teeth four to six times in their lifetimes. At around 40 to 60 years of age, the elephant loses the last of its molars and will likely die of starvation which is a common cause of death.

8. African elephants have 26 teeth in total. The enamel plates of the molars are fewer in number than in Asian elephants. as.

The Amazon River is undoubtedly the largest river in the world by discharge volume of water. However, its position as the second-longest river in the world is highly disputed as the title has for long been granted to the Nile River in Egypt. The dispute arises from the determination of the origin of the Amazon. A recent 2014 study claims that the origin of the Amazon can be traced to the Cordillera Rumi Cruz.

3. The Yangtze River- 6300 Kms
The Yangtze River is the world's third longest river and the longest to flow entirely within one country. It is also the longest river in Asia. The river basin of the Yangtze houses one-third of the population of the most populated country in the world i.e., China. Traditionally, the government of China recognizes the Tuotuo tributary located in the Tanggula Mountains as the source of the river. According to new data, however, the source of the Yangtze River is located in the Jari Hill from where the headwaters of the Dam Qu tributary originate. These tributaries, and more join to form the mighty Yangtze River which finally drains into the East China Sea at Shanghai.

4. The Mississippi River- 6275Kms
The river system comprising of the Mississippi, Missouri, and Jefferson rivers, is regarded as the world's fourth longest river system. The river system drains 31 US states and 2 Canadian provinces. This is the world's fifth-longest river system and the largest draining into the Arctic Ocean. The Selenge River is regarded as the headwaters of this river system. The Selenge River is 992 km long and drains into Lake Baikal. The Angara river rises from Lake Baikal near Listvyanka and flows through the Irkutsk Oblast of Russia and finally joins the Yenisei River near Strelka. The Yenisei finally drains into the Arctic Ocean. The total length covered is 5,539 miles.

6. The Yellow River- 5464 Kms
Called the Yellow River for its color, it is the result of huge amounts of loose sediment in the water, this massive river is also known as the Huang He. Its basin is considered to be the birthplace of ancient Chinese civilization, and it still holds great value for the country, both practically and symbolically.

7. The Ob-Irtysh River- 5410 Kms
The Ob-Irtysh, also known as the Ob River, represents one of the three great Siberian rivers, along with the Yenisei and the Lena. It extends from the Altas Mountains and flows into the Arctic Ocean.

8. The Parana River- 4880 Kms
Located in South America, the Parana River is one of the longest rivers in the world and the second-largest on the continent. Its name is an abbreviation of the Tupi expression para rehe onáva, which translates to "like the sea."

9. The Congo River- 4700 Kms
Previously known as the Zaire River, the Congo stretches in a curve across the continent of Africa and has the distinction of being the only river to cross the equator twice. It's also the deepest river on earth, with depths of over 700 feet in some places.

10. The Amur River- 4480 Kms
Extending along the border between northeastern China and Russia, the Amur River also known as the Heilong Jiang is the tenth longest river in the world. While the word amur is thought to originate from a term for “water,” the Chinese Heilong Jiang translates to "black dragon river."

24/01/2023

The Virunga Mountains (also known as Mufumbiro) are a chain of volcanoes in East Africa, along the northern border of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Uganda. They include Mt. Muhabura, Gahinga, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo and Mikeno

The mountain range is a branch of the Albertine Rift Mountains, which border the western branch of the East African Rift. They are located between Lake Edward and Lake Kivu. The name "Virunga" is an English version of the Kinyarwanda word ibirunga, which means "volcanoes".

The mountain range consists of eight major volcanoes. Most of them are dormant, except Mount Nyiragongo 3,462 metres (11,358 ft) and Mount Nyamuragira 3,063 metres (10,049 ft), both in the DRC. Recent eruptions occurred in 2006, 2010 and May 2021. Mount Karisimbi is the highest volcano at 4,507 metres (14,787 ft). The oldest mountain is Mount Sabyinyo, which rises 3,634 metres (11,923 ft) above sea level.

The Virunga Mountains are home of the critically endangered mountain gorilla, listed on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species due to habitat loss, poaching, disease, and war (Butynski et al. 2003). The Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey to observe gorillas in their native habitat, is located between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.

Batwa People (Pygmies), History and Culture of Echuya Batwa
The Batwa people also known as pygmies are based in South Western Uganda and are believed to be the first inhabitants of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Keepers of the forest). They lived in the forest as hunters and gatherers which was their only means of survival.

In the 1990’s, the Batwa people were evicted from the forest without compensation as the area was gazetted as a national park to protect the endangered mountain gorillas and also made a UNESCO World Heritage site. The eviction almost led to the extinction of this indigenous community because the new lifestyle out of the forests was not familiar to them.

However in 2001, the great missionary scientists came in and introduced the schemes. They built a school, hospital and housing facilities. They also developed water and sanitation projects as well championed ways that the Batwa could generate income and sustain themselves. The main founded project is Batwa Development Program (BDP) that is managed and operated by the BDP working hand in hand with the Batwa community to ensure that their indigenous rights are respected and they also benefit from the forest being a national park and tourist attraction.

Echuya Batwa

The uniqueness about the Batwa People is that they have preserved their ancient lifestyle and this can be witnessed by their hunting acts, honey gathering and through traditional dances and folk tales.

The Batwa cultural trail experience is pioneered by the Batwa pygmies to educate their children through paying tuition as well as sharing the amazing Batwa cultural heritage and traditions with the whole world. The moments with the Batwa people.

Hike in the forest exploring every corner of it with the “keepers of the forest” as guides and observe their way of living while in the forest, including their traditional way of hunting. You also have a chance to try out your invincible hunting techniques as they lecture you on how you can apply a bow and arrow in targeting the prey.

Visit a traditional Batwa homestead and attend classes on how a meal is prepared in this community and also have it served traditionally and the best moment is tasting the meal.

Not all flora in the jungle is medicine but a talk with the good renowned medicine men will help us identify several medicinal plants as well as their roles

Dance to legendary dances and listen to the ancient traditional songs and folk tales.

Garama Cave - the famous Batwa trail

The Garama cave is one of the key attractions that should not be missed while visiting Mgahinga National park. These caves used to be a home for the Batwa who had lived there for many years until they were recently resettled.

The 342m long Garama Cave lies beneath a plateu northern edge of the park, 3km from Ntebeko. It is set in the former farmland zone but in earlier times, the cave lied in the forest when it was occupied periodically by Batwa who used it as a council chamber and a retreat after raiding their neighbours.

Facts about Garama cave

The Garama cave is 342 meters long and 14 meters deep.

Several years ago, this cave was inhabited by the pygmy Batwa people whose warriors attacked their neighboring communities, but today it is inhabited by bats.

Today the cave provides an atmospheric a performance of Batwa music at the end of the Batwa Trail.

This is one of the caves where once the crafty Batwa (who were warriors) lived and fought their neighbors, the Bantu.

The distance to the cave entrance from the park headquarters is 3 km long and it takes about 4 hours.
