Check this Video of two daring men, two professional slackline walkers who have successfully made it across the Victoria Falls on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border after two years spent in training

Two men have became the first to cross the vertigo-inducing Victoria Falls gorge in Zimbabwe, Africa, using a slackline slung across the face of the spectacular falls, known locally as ''the smoke that thunders''.
Student Lukas Irmler, 26, from Germany, and his slackline partner, 34-year-old journalist Reinhard Kleindl from Austria, rank among the best of their sport.
The two slackline professionals spent two years working towards the crossing.
The first challenge of their highline project was to bridge the 100-metre wide gorge, which they managed with a lead weight, a fishing line and a big slingshot.
Kleindl was first to step out on the highline after a coin toss between the two friends.
As he wobbled through the heavy spray and downwash of the Victoria Falls, it became apparent how tough the conditions were. The 'slack' line was pushed by the wind and spray impaired his vision, but the Austrian, who was wearing a safety harness, managed to cross the line after a few tries.
Lukas Irmler followed, successfully crossing the line in both directions, and even performing a balancing trick as he enjoyed the breathtaking view high above the canyon.

A culture of many generations – The Masai.

Did you know traditionally, the Maasai rely on meat, milk and blood from cattle for protein and caloric needs. People drink blood on special occasions. It is given to a circumcised person (o/esipolioi), a woman who has given birth (entomononi) and the sick (oltamueyiai). Also, on a regular basis drunk elders, ilamerak, use the blood to alleviate intoxication and hangovers. Blood is very rich in protein and is good for the immune system. However, its use in the traditional diet is waning due to the reduction of livestock numbers.
More recently, the Maasai have grown dependent on food produced in other areas such as maize meal (ungawamahindi), rice, potatoes, cabbage (known to the Maasai as goat leaves), etc. The Maasai who live near crop farmers have engaged in cultivation as their primary mode of subsistence. In these areas, plot sizes are generally not large enough to accommodate herds of animals; thus the Maasai are forced to farm. Our people traditionally frown upon this. Maasai believe that tilizing the land for crop farming is a crime against nature. Once you cultivate the land, it is no longer suitable for grazing.

Wildebeest Migration - Kenya or Tanzania?

The Great Wildebeest Migration is without doubt the highlight of most trips to Kenya and Tanzania. Usually tourists flock to Kenya's Masai Mara in hope of witnessing the millions of wildebeests crossing the Mara River.

What you may not know is that this migration is a highly complex natural phenomenon. Its timing varies widely from year to year. Some years the wildebeest cross from Tanzania's Serengeti into Kenya's Mara in July... other years in August or September. In years with no rains in the Mara, and hence no new grass, the wildebeest will stay in Tanzania.

Most people are not aware that 80% of the Mara River is bordered by Tanzania on both sides. Only 20% of this river is located in Kenya where, in the Masai Mara, there are now over 3,700 beds. In the northern Serengeti there are only 11 safari lodges and camps.

Maaai Mara represents only 3% of the total Serengeti ecosystem, whilst that in Tanzania hoards 97%.

Call on us at Bateleur Africa Tours and Travel and we will work out a personalised safari package that works for just you.
