ICONIC NAPAK SITE RECOGNIZED AT THE 60TH IUGS CONGRESS IN SPAIN

At a congress held in Bilbao-Zumaia, Spain from October 25–28, 2022, Napak was designated a primate and geological site of International significance.

Along with other government representatives, a delegation from the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities led by Permanent Secretary Mrs. Doreen S. Katusiime travelled to Spain to witness the acknowledgement of the iconic geological site. The delegation also included Mrs. Jackline Nyiracyiza Besigye, Ag.Commissioner for the Department of Sites and Monuments, and the Franco-Uganda Palaeontological Expedition (UPE) led by Professor Brigitte Senut and Dr. Martin Pickford.

After undergoing an extensive nomination process, the historic site Napak which is situated in the horn of Uganda was ranked 39th out of the 100 sites during the 60th IUGS congress. It was included in the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and UNESCO World Heritage Center's list of the top 100 global geological and heritage sites.

The sites were nominated under various categories of Palaeontology, Mineralogy, History of Geosciences, Stratigraphy, Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Volcanology and Tectonics.

Under the category of palaeontology and volcanology, the Miocene Primates' Palaeontological Site of Napak received a prestigious nomination. It is highly viewed as one of the richest global sources of Early Miocene primates that are still in excellent condition, together with a spectacular fossil fauna and flora.

Efforts to designate iconic geological sites that are acknowledged by all geoscience and heritage communities regarding their impact on critically understanding planet Earth and its history were launched with the recognition and disclosure of Napak as a Miocene Primates Palaeontological Site in Napak, Uganda.

A case study on the historic Napak was started in the 1920s but put on hold because of unrest in the 1970s and 1980s until 1985, when UPE picked up the study afresh and carried out the research that resulted in the geosite's nomination. Similar investigations have been successful in illuminating the geological and palaeohistorical history of the Karamoja sub-region through collaboration between Napak locals and geoscientists from other rural areas.

The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) promotes nominated sites by increasing tourism to those destinations which helps to boost and increase the amount of money that may be collected from visitors, both tourists and research scientists. Through initiatives in education, preservation, sustainability, environmental protection and tourism promotion—all of which are components of the 2030 Agenda, the union unites issues of humanity and social needs.

The iconic Napak site is located in Napak District, NorthEastern Uganda. The district was named after Mt. Napak with its headquarters in Lokitede.
