Long distance trails inspire contradictory tales of solitude and camaraderie, deserted river beds and mountain plateaus, pleasure and pain. The idea of covering thousands of miles on foot it itself barely believable.

The Church is planning to celebrate St Janani Luwum day every February 16, with this year’s event in Kitgum.
Kampala- The Church has launched a series of activities to honour late Archbishop Janani Luwum, the head of the Anglican Church in Uganda announced yesterday.
The initiative seeks to turn the tragic day of February 16, 1977 into a ‘special’ celebration with the establishment of St Janani Luwum Memorial Charity aimed at preparing the annual event.
Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Stanley Ntagali said St Janani Luwum’s day will be celebrated on February 16 this year in Mucwini village, Kitgum District where the deceased was buried. read more

UWA FUNDS PURONGO CULTURAL TOURISM CENTRE
This year communities in Purongo sub-county in Nwoya district must be counting their blessings after becoming a beneficiary of Uganda Wildlife Authority when keys to their new cultural centre were handed over to their chairman Samuel Baker under their revenue sharing scheme.
The centre remains empty but albeit a beacon of hope for a community that was at the centre of the northern insurgency for two decades.
The villages comprising the sub-county including Pamero, Watomira, Pabit,Latoro have been urged to contribute arts and crafts to be displayed at this mini-museum. In addition the chairman said they also plan to put up a bar and restaurant. See details http://www.northernugandatourism.info/?p=951

Located in Pakwach, Albert Nile Tourism and Conservation Association is championing the development of tourism in the region since 2008.

The ACOTA coordinator Alfred Oyirworth gave us an insight into the activities of the association at their offices in Pakwach:

The association focuses on conservation and eco-tourism projects such as tree planting, bird watching ,boat cruises, village walks, visit to the blacksmith –bow and arrow maker, learn how to prepare traditional meals ,crafts and visits to cultural and historical sites and empowering women and youth through tourism.

Also at the meet was medium and caretaker of Wanglei cultural site , Walter Jalobo who works closely with the association .He gave a narrative of the story of a spear and a bead and rituals.

He appealed for support in the construction of a house for the kingdom relics including Karkop(wooden shoes), owerr (wooden dishes) and local spoons(cowrie shells).

The association generates revenue through membership fees, fees from boat cruises to Emin Pashas at USD15 per person (minimum USD 100) Fort Wadelai.

Their efforts have not gone unnoticed by the authorities with Uganda Wildlife Authority donating a motorized boat in October.

Other prospects are to supply the lodges within Murchison Fallls with vegetables, fruits and other supplies.

A.Onegi Obel
Angelo Onegi Obel (April 4, 1932 – December 16, 2008) was a Ugandan economist and politician and former adviser to the President of Uganda.
Obel was born in the village of Pacego Pumvuga in the sub county of Panyango in Jonam in the southern part of what was formerly known as West Nile district, today within the territory of Nebbi District. In the early 1940s he attended Ngetta Catholic Primary School in Lira before attending junior secondary school at St. Aloysius College in Nyapea until in 1948. He then joined Namilyango college and graduated in 1953.
After graduating, Obel became employed by the Uganda civil services and worked as a clerical officer in accountancy in Lira and Arua. He later obtained a Cambridge school certificate through correspondence enrolled in Assumption University before joining the University of Toronto, where he graduated with his Masters degree in economics in 1965.He then returned to Uganda and was accepted into the Ugandan government, serving in the Ministry of Finance and as commissioner for taxation.
In 1968, he became employed in the Bank of Uganda and served both as Deputy Governor and Governor, respectively until 1978. He was elected to the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1995 constitution of Uganda.
His efforts towards developing the economy and instructure of Uganda and corporate interests often led to conflict and in 2006, for instance, he was involved in a legal battle over the construction of a bridge which jeopardized the liveihoods of local farmers.
Note:
Onegi Obel is often confused with his son Geoffrey Onegi Obel who is also a noted economist who led the NSSF (national social security fund) through its largest expansion in size and productivity since its foundation in 1986.

All roads shall lead to Gulu ,northern Uganda on 6th December , when Aruu County M.P Honorable Odong Otto is set to open ‘Signature Lounge’a lavish discotheque and later in early 2015 the Casino.
Located on Cemetery road, the two tiered with an terrace that has commanding views of the city has a discotheque that is equipped with state of the art sound and lighting, set to raise the bar in the city’s budding night life .
This was confirmed by Juliet Otto wife to the Honorable MP who has been by the side of her husband juggling between legal practice, on site work and mothering.
Gulu was at the center of the twenty year insurgency better known for child commuters escaping abduction from Kony rebels and NGO’s with associated names like ‘War Child’ and ‘Invisible Children’.
Development in such super structure is testimony of the peace that has returned to the region.
It is expected that the growing middle class in Gulu, Kampala, Juba, expatriates ,investors and the diaspora community shall patronize the club. Kudos to the OO’s.

27/10/2014

President Museveni has appealed to the people of Napore-county in Kaabong district to protect the wildlife corridor for the survival and sustainability of the animals in the park and for their livelihood, describing the park as a gold mine to Karamoja and Uganda.

President Museveni meeting elders from Napore

“As far as Uganda is concerned, it is getting more money from torusim than from agriculture. Keeping the park is very important. If you want the park to survive, that corridor is very important. You have to support the corridor,” he stressed.

The President was yesterday addressing elders from Napore at a meeting with the district leadership and politicians at Apoka Safari Lodge in Kidepo Valley National Park. The meeting was attended by the Minister for Karamoja Affairs Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni and that of Ethics and Intergrity, also area Member of Parliament Fr. Simon Lokodo.

The people of Napore would like to use most land for agriculture and are disputing government boundaries drawn in 1963 a move that has brought them in collision with the Uganda Wild Life Authority.

The corridor runs from South Sudan cuts across Kabong to Iri-Iri up to Pian Upe in Nakapiripirit district to Mt. Elgon.

Animals utilize the corridor during the migration period for crossbreeding and sustaining their existence and strength.

President Museveni, urged them to be patient, and desist from cultivating the land in the park until a win-win solution is found.

“It is now clear that facts are not clear. We must find the truth. There are three important issues to note, conservation, agriculture and environmental protection. We want food security but also incomes,” he said.

The President emphasized the need to conserve wildlife in the park as that will attract many tourists, a sector that generates a lot of income for the country more than coffee. The President was, however, happy to learn that the people of Napore own an average of 16 acres per family. He encouraged them to maintain that acreage and properly utilize it for commercial agriculture.

‘I am glad to learn that each family has got 16 acres, this is very good. If you could maintain that and use it properly you will be very rich,” he observed.

President Museveni warned them against land fragmentation adding that it is a source of poverty, as land will be reduced to sizes of plots. The President also advised them to keep Friesian cows as they yield more milk than the indigenous ones. He further advised them to leave the growing of cotton to people who own huge chunks of land adding that families with little land holdings can adopt intensive commercial farming for better returns.

The President together with the Minister for Karamoja Affairs Mrs. Janet Museveni pledged to organize a trip for the leaders and elders of Napore to Masaka for them to grasp the meaning of commercial agriculture done on few acres of land.
