Hello 🌍 Trotters
Have you heard of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakitoma Uganda? It is home to a few bird species including our national bird the crested crane and mammals. Or have you seen the only rhinos we have in uganda ? The white Southern Rhinos ?
What do you know of rhinos ? Let me tell you some amazing facts I recently learnt about rhinos during my visit to the sanctuary.
1. White Rhinos Aren’t White
A common misconception about rhinos is that white rhinos are white and black rhinos are black.
Both white and black rhinos are grey.
Actually, the word “white” is merely a mispronunciation by English settlers in South Africa of a Dutch word, “wijd,” or wide. The white rhinoceros was described as “wijd” because it has wider lips than the black rhino with its prehensile upper lip. The black rhino gets its name because it’s usually seen covered in mud.
2. Rhinos can run at a speed of 40km/hr
3. They have 2 horns
4. When they sleep their ears are always alert and aware of the surroundings. They can sleep while standing or lying down.
5. The female white rhino is called the cow and the male, a bull.
6. Male white rhinoceros can grow to 1.8 meters (5.9 ft) tall and weigh 2,500 kg (5,500 lbs) – that’s 30 men’s weight!
7. They eat over 55 kg of grass each day and over 72 Litres of water daily.
8. It only grows hair on its tail and horns.
Please add any more interesting facts of rhinos if you know any, I’d love to know !!!
