The Punishment Island- Akampene

Punishment Island in Lake Bunyonyi
The Bakiga used to leave unmarried pregnant girls on this small island - to die of hunger or while trying to swim to the mainland (swimming skills were rare). This was to intimidate the rest, to show them not to do the same. A man without cows to pay the bride price could go to the island and pick up a girl. The practice got abandoned in the first half of the 20th century.

Habuharo island
is a place of peace.

This is Punishment Island or Akampene in the local language. A tiny, uninhabited island in Lake Bunyonyi with horrible history attached to it. Until the 1940’s unmarried girls who got pregnant were taken to the island and left to die. Only some very lucky ones escaped their doom.
The reason for their banning was that they were not only bringing shame to their families but also robbing them of wealth. In this part of Uganda, amongst others, a young woman could only get pregnant after marriage. Whenever a virgin daughter got married, the bride's family received a bride price, mostly paid with livestock. A girl became worthless when she got pregnant before she was married.
With most of the people, especially girls, not knowing how to swim, a young woman that was dumped on the island, had mainly two options: jump into the water and drown, or wait to die from cold and hunger.
Few girls have been as lucky as to survive Punishment Island, thanks to young men who were too poor to pay a bride price. Making sure they remained unseen, they would paddle to the island during night hours and save a girl from it. It was a way for those men to get married without having to pay a bride price.
The practice was only abandoned in the 1940s, also due to the influence of missionaries; one of them being Dr. Sharp, who also made Bwama Island a quarantine for lepra patients, Dr. Sharp is known to also have rescued girls from Punishment Island, for them to be safe.
Mauda Kyitaragabirwe is the last survivor of the punishment island and we can arrange for you a trip to her to listen to her heartbreaking story. Luck was on her side; she was rescued from the island by a fisherman who married her and they have six children.

Upside down island is one of the islands found in Lake Bunyonyi. The story behind this island is that , one time a family that was staying on that island was having a feast and friends and relatives had been invited to attend the party. While they were partying and merrymaking there came an old woman who had not been invited to the party, she requested for food and these people refused. With all the disappointment she left the island, after a short while the island flipped and everybody that was there drowned. Morale of the story is that Bakiiga are welcoming and should serve food to everybody who comes to their home whether invited or not.

That little island is called the punishment island, its where girls who would get married outside wedlocks were thrown, it was an offence to become pregnant before marriage and would bring a curse to the family. Pregnant girls would be thrown there and men who didnt have or didnt want to pay bride price would swim there and get themselves free women to marry or else the girls would starve to death.
