Today we saw the costal town of Arcachon (feels like a French version of Hollywood Beach in Florida) and the Dune du Pilat, Europe’s largest sand dune, at over 300 feet tall and over a mile and a half long. If you love the beach and fresh oysters, this part of France is for you !

OK maybe this is cheating just a bit because San Sebastián is technically in Spain, but it’s so close to the French border (15 miles) that it makes a great day trip. This city is heavily influenced by the local Basque culture, and the food and scenery is incredible! I highly recommend trying pinxtos, which are the Basque version of tapas.

Saint-Emilion is a beautiful village with a fascinating history. A famous monk settled here in the 8th century to become a hermit. He dug out a cave residence in the limestone. More monks followed, and eventually there was a monastery and a huge underground church (we visited the church but no photos are allowed). Now it’s famous for wine tourism, with several vineyards surrounding the town, and hundreds more in the region.
