Pellona Castelnaeana, the "Apapá (aka Dourada or Sardinata), is another underrated species found in the Amazon region. They look a lot like an American Shad or a Portuguese Sardine, but they can grow up to 13lb and 27". Catching them on the fly rod is, at first, tricky; as you can see them flashing following your fly and then reject it in the last second; and, in the exact moment that you get a strike , you are often in the end of your stripping cycle (when the fly briefly stops), so it's hard to get the hook set. But, once you get the hang of it, and anticipate the strike, it's all fun afterwards. The fish will dive deep, and later jump out of the water for some acrobatics. Despite its looks, the Apapá is pretty fragile so pictures of the trophy have to be quick and its release pretty gentle. I don't think anyone travels to fish an Apapá, but catching them never fails to bring us some happiness.

Think of a fish that resembles a Pike, is fast as a Bonefish, accurate as a sniper, jumps like a Tarpon and resides in some rivers in the Amazon forest.
The "Bicuda" (Boulengerella Cuvieri) is the dream of every Brazilian angler; reaching up to 43" and 19 lb, these "torperdo-like" fish, will show up from nowhere to take your line and do its best to get the hook off their bony jaws.
I caught a couple of these recently using flyfishing gear and will tell you there's not many other fish that are more fun to catch, despite its size. And look at how beautiful its tail is.
I will post some videos of the Bicuda as soon as I can; sit tight!

Peacock Bass Azul (Blue).

"Azul", the "Dark Knight" of the Peacock Bass family. They do not grow nearly as large as the Peacock Bass Temensis and are not as colorful, but they are fearless and fight pretty hard for its size. The current Brazilian record for the Azul is 26.7 inches, from the LAGO DO PEIXE, in the new state of Tocantins; which is pretty impressive already. June, July and August are the slowest months to catch that fish over there, still I was able to have lots of fun.
Azul is popular species in Brazil but totally unknown elsewhere.

Peacock Bass Açu Fly Fishing Expedition, hosted by Kevin Howell !

No matter how big are the Peacock Bass that you catch in a trip to Brazil, your quest is never completed until you face the mean Paca-Açu.
Paca-Açu is a phase of the Peacock Bass Temensis, in which, all it cares about is to feed. When the Paca-Açu takes your fly, you know you are in for a good fight.
The EP Peanut Butter fly works very well. Also note how much it demands from that good old Echo fly rod. What a blast!
These were not 80 cm "Peas", but they fought harder than them.
