Some travel tips for anxiety and for children with Autism. Traveling with anxiety and autism can be challenging, but with proper preparation, it can be a more manageable and even enjoyable experience. Here are some tips for flying:
Preparation
1. Research and Plan Ahead: Understand every step of the journey from getting to the airport to arriving at your destination. This includes knowing the layout of the airport, the check-in process, security screening, and boarding procedures.
2. Notify the Airline: Inform the airline about your needs. They may offer accommodations such as early boarding, special seating, or assistance through security. TSA Cares and TSA Precheck are helpful programs for getting through security. You have to let them know several days to several weeks ahead of time for them to be effective.
3. Create a Detailed Itinerary: Write down every step of the journey, including timings, gate numbers, and any other important details. Visual schedules can be especially helpful.
Packing
4. Comfort Items: Bring items that provide comfort and help with sensory needs, such as noise-canceling headphones, earplugs, fidget toys, or a weighted blanket or lap pad.
5. Medications and Essentials: Pack any necessary medications and keep them in your carry-on. Bring snacks, a refillable water bottle, and any other essentials you might need. Medical bags fly for free.
6. Entertainment: Bring books, games, music, or movies to keep occupied during the flight.
At the Airport
7. Arrive Early: Give yourself plenty of time to navigate the airport without feeling rushed. This also allows for any unexpected delays or changes.
8. Security Screening: Be prepared for security screening by understanding what will happen. You can request a private screening if you feel uncomfortable with the standard process. You have the right to have a caregiver with you throughout the screening process.
9. Find a Quiet Space: Many airports have quiet rooms or areas designated for relaxation. Use these spaces to take a break from the noise and crowds.
During the Flight
10. Board Early or Last: Depending on your preference, boarding early allows you to settle in without the rush, while boarding last minimizes waiting time on the plane.
11. Communicate with Flight Attendants: Let them know if you need any special accommodations or assistance. They can help make your flight more comfortable.
12. Use Comfort Items: Use your comfort items as needed to manage sensory sensitivities or anxiety. This could include listening to calming music or using a travel pillow. Download music or movies ahead of time.
Mental Strategies
13. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practice deep breathing, meditation, or other relaxation techniques to help manage anxiety.
14. Stay Informed: Ask flight attendants for updates about the flight to reduce uncertainty.
15. Positive Reinforcement: Focus on the positive aspects of the journey and reward yourself for each successful step.
Post-Flight
16. Allow Time to Unwind: After arriving at your destination, give yourself time to relax and adjust.
17. Reflect and Adjust: Reflect on what strategies worked and what didn’t, so you can adjust your approach for future travels.
By preparing thoroughly and utilizing these strategies, you can reduce the stress associated with flying and make the experience more enjoyable!
