Off the EDGE 2016 program focus: La Otra Orilla

Sensitive to the world of music and dance from very early childhood, Myriam Allard’s life changed when she discovered flamenco. She now lives in Montreal, where she founded La Otra Orilla in 2006 with singer and director Hedi Graja. Within this company she has developed a unique choreographic expression and produced 7 different shows that have toured Canada, the United States, South America and the United Kingdom with much success.

Works by acclaimed La Otra Orilla are recognizable for their unique and radical approach to flamenco, reflecting an absolutely trans-disciplinary vision. Based on the collaboration between dancer and choreographer Myriam Allard and singer-director Hedi Graja, this company embodies and celebrates the timeless and universal appeal of flamenco. The artistic directors rely on their in-depth knowledge of the nuances and modes of this art to suggest a hybrid language that is modern and poetic, creating strong productions that are firmly rooted in the present.

As part of Off the EDGE Program 2 on Saturday March 5th they will be performing excerpts of Moi&lesAutres (Me & the Others) by Myriam Allard and Hedi Graja. In this brand new piece, the charismatic dancer-choreographer Myriam Allard and the singer and director Hedi Graja reaffirm their unique style of reinvented flamenco. Hybrid, iconoclastic and poetic. See below for a video preview.

Off the EDGE 2016 program focus: Kyle Abraham/ Abraham.In.Motion (PART I)

A 2013 MacArthur Fellow, Kyle Abraham began his dance training at the Civic Light Opera Academy and the Creative and Performing Arts High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He continued his dance studies in New York, receiving a BFA from SUNY Purchase and an MFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.

The mission of Kyle Abraham / Abraham.In.Motion is to create an evocative interdisciplinary body of work. Born into hip-hop culture in the late 1970s and grounded in Abraham’s artistic upbringing in classical cello, piano, and the visual arts, the goal of the movement is to delve into identity in relation to a personal history. The work entwines a sensual and provocative vocabulary with a strong emphasis on sound, human behavior and all things visual in an effort to create an avenue for personal investigation and exposing that on stage. A.I.M. is a representation of dancers from various disciplines and diverse personal backgrounds. Combined together, these individualities create movement that is manipulated and molded into something fresh and unique.

As part of Program 1 on Friday March 4th, Kyle Abraham / Abraham.In.Motion will be performing ABSENT MATTER. This piece explores the perceived posthumous grandeur of death and violence in urban communities throughout the US through sound and movement, tracing the racial epithets in songs of Grief, Love, and Death by artists ranging from Notorious B.I.G and Tupac to contemporary rap artists like Kendrick Lamar and Drake. The work explores hip-hop’s lineage to create an abstracted dialogue about race in America through the lens of those who feel unacknowledged or without value.

Please see the video below for a preview of ABSENT MATTER.
