As you have probably seen in the news, there is a new virus being spread by mosquito bites called the Zika virus. This is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and women who may become pregnant that are traveling to Latin America and some other parts of the world. Another reason to be very, very diligent about preventing mosquitos from biting you. NOTE: the mosquito that spreads the Zika virus bites all day long, not just in the evening. Read more on the CDC travel website at http://www.cdc.gov/zika/

Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.

WHY I CARE....

In many ways, I've spent my life working up to the launch of Healthy Safe Mission Trip.

As a 23 year old Fulbright Fellow in Indonesia working on community health programs, I contracted TYPHOID, in spite of the fact that I had been vaccinated! I spent a week in a public Indonesian hospital and nearly died.

Upon my return to the States, I wrote my first version of Staying Healthy in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Since then, I've lived in Guatemala and worked in 30 other countries. And avoided any other major illnesses or safety problems!

My goal now is to share my insights and help you Stay Healthy, Stay Safe, so that you can Make a Difference. I will be looking to you for input and guidance on your biggest needs and concerns as you prepare for your own life changing experiences.

Oh, and by the way. As you can see from my 24th birthday party with the Indonesian children that I worked with (see photo).
