We have been hard at work for months, so heading to Bury The Hatchet in Inman Park was just the thing!! We have some fiercely competitive people but it's what makes a competitive event like this so much fun! Friendly 'trash-talk' and cheering for some amazing throws what just what the Sykes Team needed.

March 8, 2023 was a celebrity studded day as the Xernona Statue, sculpted by Ed Dwight, was unveiled. Sykes Consulting is proud to have designed the structure to support the Xernona Clayton statue. Being a part of this project, we are a part of the structure of this city, supporting its culture, its history, and its people.

Another amazing Black History icon is Shirley Chisholm

First African American woman elected to Congress.

The oldest of four children born to immigrant parents from Guyana and Barbados, Shirley Chisholm is the first African American woman in Congress. She served seven terms representing the people of New York. Before she entered politics, she earned her master’s degree from Columbia University in early childhood education and worked as a nursery school teacher. Sykes Consulting, Inc. is honored to be part of the team designing the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center in East Flatbush, New York.

To kick off Black History Month, Sykes Consulting, Inc. would like to highlight Xernona Clayton.

Civil Rights leader and creator of the Trumpet Awards

In addition to her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement she is more notably the first African American Woman in the South to host a regularly scheduled prime time talk show. The show was called Variations which later became the Xernona Clayton Show. She is also the creator of the Trumpet awards which began in 1993 and continue to honor African American Achievements. Sykes is proud to be part of the design team involved in erecting the bronze statue to honor Xernona Clayton. This will be the first statue of a black woman erected in downtown Atlanta.

A few weeks ago, the Sykes team got away from the city for a little while for a company retreat at Lake Lanier. We were having so much fun that we forgot to take more pictures! After we had a few meetings and team bonding activities, we had a great afternoon at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!

"The GVSA Aviation Studio is busy working on 18 projects at three airports. The new City of Atlanta Fire Station 32 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is under construction near the Cell Phone Lot by the South Terminal. The station is positioned between the runways and the terminals to allow for prompt responses. The facility contains four large, long bays to accommodate eight or more (ARFF, EMS, Engine, and Pumper) apparatus. The site is designed to allow for entry and exit of apparatus at both ends of the apparatus bays. Amenities for the Atlanta Fire Rescue department personnel include a dayroom and dining area adjacent to a full open kitchen, a fitness room, and an outdoor picnic and grilling area. The facility also includes sleeping quarters, administrative, and operational areas. This project is a joint venture with Corgan.

Additional escalators, a new elevator, spectacular views of the apron, and state of the art wayfinding and flight information will enhance the customer journey to and from the PlaneTrain and Transportation Mall. This expansion is one of several projects underway in collaboration with Corgan.

This project at Camp Twin Lakes is so meaningful knowing how much of an impact this organization makes on the lives of children and families living with serious illnesses, disabilities, and life challenges. Currently, the camp serves about 10,000 kids per year but this project will allow an additional 3,500 campers to enjoy the benefits of camp annually. We look forward to more children benefiting from this amazing organization!

We are thrilled to welcome Shawn Green to the SYKES team for the summer!

Shawn is a senior at the University of Alabama, majoring in Civil Engineering. He is excited to learn and work on designing safe and serviceable structures. He has already begun practicing detailing in Revit, modeling in RAM Elements, and reviewing shop drawings. Besides diving into structures, he hopes to learn about the consulting business and optimizing communication between architects, contractors, and his own team.

Christian has had a passion for buildings and how they’re built from a very young age. This drove him to study architecture and structural engineering. Christian has a Master's in Architecture from Andrews University and a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from Kennesaw State University. Now he’s found a home in Sykes where he can continue fostering his knowledge and love for building design.

Great progress has been made on the new Transportation Center in Albany, Georgia. Most of the structural steel has been installed and the site is really beginning to take shape. It has been a pleasure working with LRA Constructors, Inc. and Niles Bolton Associates in providing the The City of Albany with a new transportation hub.
