Vault's team have recently been working on a one of a kind and extremely special project; providing art services for the removal and installation of the famous Austin City Limits stage backdrop. These panels provided the backdrop for performances by country music legends such as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings as well as countless significant contemporary artists, all broadcast nationally for decades by PBS.

Consisting of approximately 20 large panels depicting Austin's skyline at night, the backdrop debuted in Austin City Limits' seventh season in 1982. The backdrop was auctioned following a final performance in 2020 by ACL favorite Garth Brooks, with the proceeds benefiting the move of Austin PBS to its new facility at Austin Community College's Highland campus.

Vault's team are working on the logistics of transporting and installing the panels in their new settings with the assistance of the renowned Bill Haddad of Blue House Design to ensure that the lighting components remain functional and safe.

As Texas' premier art services provider, we at Vault are grateful to lend our expertise in caring for Austin's most recognizable vista.

We recently had the pleasure of working with artist and art handler Ruben Luna on a project to conserve the San Pedro Creek Culture Park murals. While in the San Antonio area, we were also able to visit his impressive show at Presa House Gallery. Learn more about Ruben below, and make sure to give him a follow on Instagram .

Ruben Luna (b. 1974), aka ‘Gacho Style,’ is a self-taught contemporary artist born and raised in San Antonio’s South Side. Luna creates work exploring the theory of Rasquachismo. He draws inspiration in the creative challenge of generating new mixed-media objects through various techniques, often incorporating crude or the most basic of materials. Luna offers nostalgic tributes to the people, phrases, and things with creativity found in his hometown’s working-class Mexican American communities. His work is often playful, but at its core, it reveals the ability to be resourceful and “make do.” Each piece is a practice in problem-solving, overcoming aesthetics for the necessity of function combining inventiveness, ingenuity, and improvisation.

Thank you to our friends at San Pedro Creek Culture Park for capturing our team addressing the wear and tear on the murals at the creek. As stated by their team, "Like other elements in the park, public art also requires maintenance over time due to exposure to the elements. With a little TLC, they'll be back to their original splendor and ready to welcome you back for a peaceful stroll along the creek!"

Stay tuned for more photos and information about this ongoing project from our team!

Meet the team Monday featuring: José González

Tell us about yourself.
I've been with Vault since they opened their doors. It's been fun (and challenging) to be with a company from the ground floor. Prior to this, I worked at a similar company in San Francisco in a similar position for several years. My specialty is packing art, inventory, and shipping coordination. I never really knew this type of work existed, so I sort of stumbled into what turned out to be a very rewarding career. My background is in film/animation, which I still work in occasionally.

What's your favorite part about working at Vault?
Naturally, getting to handle the art. Especially when there's a high-need piece that requires special attention or when an artist I admire comes across my workbench. I'm also very lucky to work with an amazing storage crew that keep me sane when things get a little wild around here.

What do you like to do for fun?
Going to the movies, illustrating, nice dinners with my wife, and spending time with our 2 little dudes.

What's your favorite type of art?
As an illustration dork I'm of course drawn to the early stable of Mad Magazine artists, in particular Wally Wood and Basil Wolverton. R. Crumb, for better or worse. Big Philip Guston fan. Too many filmmakers to count, but Kelly Reichardt, Alfonso Cuaron, and Lynne Ramsay are high on the list for sure.

Discover a New Artist // Elizabeth Chapin
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Elizabeth Chapin is a contemporary American portrait artist whose mixed media work explores and deconstructs the ideas of nostalgia, gender roles (especially those of women) and the status quo through an anthropological lens. Chapin's background as a traditional portrait artist has evolved and while she still paints portraits, she has begun incorporating materials like undulating fringe, plexiglass, silk and tulle ruffles, neon and stuffed canvas. These dynamic elements turn a flat painting into a 3D manifestation. To best unravel what nostalgia means and how it holds us where we are, Chapin mostly uses young women as her subjects, many of whom are in transition or caught in the collateral instability of competitiveness, desirability, observation and anxiety. The works wholly convey Chapin's hope for women to be utterly themselves—free of both shame and duress. Her most recent works will continue to push this desire, but will explore the banishment and solitude that often comes with being a woman, from Eve in Eden to The Birth of Venus to today's Instagram models. Using a frame of mythology and origin, Chapin continues to search for what it means to be fully oneself.
