The many faces of Our Lady of Guadalupe of San Miguel de Allende. I made it my mission to photograph every Virgin I found on every corner, wall, and doorway to share on this important feast day for the most beloved patron saint of Mexico. These are some of my favorites, most taken in the Colonia San Antonio neighborhood of the city.

The feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe is tomorrow. This miraculous and iconic image appeared on the cloak of Juan Diego in 1531 and today appears on just about everything else in Mexico, including every corner in San Miguel de Allende. The celebration starts with fireworks at midnight!

One minute travel is all sunshine, motion, and wonder ... and the next you're stuck inside because it's cold and raining and you can't walk on the cobblestone streets without slipping (and it reminds you of your first job at Wendy's when you fell all the time on the greasy tiled hamburger floor) ... but then you're glad you cleaned out the French bakery up the street before the rain started and you have coffee and internet and a portable heater at your feet.

Christmas is coming, and the San Juan de Dios market has everything! Miniature pinatas, paper doves, a rainbow of crinkled foil garlands, tinsel, trees, manger figures, statues, stars, balls in every color, blinking lights and baby Jesus in every size with regal dress and sandals to match.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is everywhere in San Miguel de Allende, and vintage VW Beetles are the best way to get around on the narrow, cobblestone streets. Love this combo!

If you've been playing along with our little game of 'Where am I?'... here's the answer: San Miguel de Allende in the high desert of Mexico, north of Mexico City. Historic, artsy, and beautiful, the town is more than 400 years old and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The cobblestone streets here are like walking on a riverbed, and narrow sidewalks will have you hugging telephone poles and climbing up and down stairs as you navigate up and down hills. I was advised to stay 6 feet behind someone in case they trip and fall.

Two more clues...the stars are coming out for the Christmas celebration, but it's 70 degrees and sunny. We are also sitting higher than Denver, elevation-wise.

Another hint: Even though it's in the high desert, access to water (and not the coastal kind) has helped this town thrive for more than 500 years.
