Traveling for Thanksgiving? Use those smart phones for a safer and smarter drive. On our trip we used TWC-Radar, Google Maps with Traffic and Waze for driver notifications of traffic concerns. These are great tools if you're making the trip around from Chicago to Michigan or anywhere weather can affect travel. Lake effect snow in SW Michigan continues to slow traffic and cause accidents. Here is a cool painting time saver. Don't want to wait to paint the other side of a board? Here I used the old board I'm replacing that was torn up by squirrels trying to get to my bird feeders (see pieces missing?). I hammered thru it six nails--2 on each end and two in the middle. It levitates your new board. Paint one side then flip it placing it on the six nail points and paint the other side. 1/2 time!

Nice! File things away and out-of-site as you go, but when you need those documents for a business meeting or committee meeting, just grab, latch and go.

It's time for your Winter Clothing Switchover.

Before putting away t-shirts, shorts, Summer dresses and shoes, wash them so they're ready to wear when the Spring arrives.

Designate an out-of-the-way place for your seasonal clothes like in a plastic container on the top shelf in your closet or in a container under your bed.

Or if you're so lucky a seasonal closet downstairs which makes the transition between seasons so much easier.

We need "Border Control" in the USA! I'm not talking about illegal immigration. I'm talking about limiting stuff.

Living in the U.S.A. we're inundated with product promotion, and we can satisfy that emotional trigger immediately with our smart phones.

Create some border control by eliminating two things in your house for every new one. Buy a new shirt--eliminate two you don't wear. Buy a new toy for your child's birthday--eliminate two that they have outgrown or are broken. Bringing in the mail--sort it in the garage at your recycling bins eliminating the unwanted before it arrives in the house.

I found this hand-written note from my mom with a list of “4 D’s”. She’s still speaking to me from Heaven. This note is so relevant to organizing stuff, either while working with a professional organizer or on your own. The title and author are unknown. I like to think these are “The 4 D’s to Organizing Your Stuff”, but it could be “The 4 D’s to Making a Decision” or “The 4 D’s to Brainstorming”

How would you title these “4 D’s”?

What do you do with your burnt out CFL light bulbs?

Don't throw dead CFL light bulbs in the garbage since they contain mercury. Instead, "The Home Depot is proud to offer free CFL recycling in all U.S. stores."

"For an always expanding list of recycling and disposal options, consumers can also contact their local municipal solid waste agency, or go to www.epa.gov/bulbrecycling or www.earth911.org.

If your state or local environmental regulatory agency permits you to put used or broken CFLs in the garbage, seal the bulb in two plastic bags and put it in the outside trash, or other protected outside location, for the next trash collection.

Not an organizing tip, but certainly something that will simply the cooking process and to keep your Kitchen space clean and free of bacteria. I didn't wash my Lemon-Greek Herb chicken before I grilled it tonight. The family enjoyed it too. Bonus!

Are you flying your flag today?

With Father's Day approaching and today being Flag Day, I can't help but recall the day I decided to hang our flag vertically from our awning. My dad, a WWII veteran returned home and I was proud of my new display. He said, "You have it hanging wrong." I was mad but he was right, and I always think of him and his service as a result.

The inefficiency of grocery shopping...

I had to do some quick grocery shopping. At the checkout I voiced the inefficiency of me loading my shopping cart to unload it at the counter, for them to bag it and reload my cart for me to unload it again at my car. Everything is handled four times. She asked, "Do you need help unloading at your car?" Of course not. BUT If I could bag as I shopped and then was able to push the cart through a large scanner to capture all the product info within, that would be a tremendous time saver. Of course we'd still have to weigh some items, but still this could be huge. I know in retail they can scan a box with various items and it picks up all the various clothing info and directly adds them to the inventory system. That's what we need!
