Piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) are a special treasure on the shores of Beaver Island. They are endangered due to habitat loss, disturbance, and predation. As ground nesting birds, keep an eye out for nests & eggs.

Beaver Island has been recognized as Michigan’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary! Riley’s Ridge is just minutes from the sanctuary area near Martins Bluff. Guests have raved about the starry nights and a lucky handful have been able to see the Aurora Borealis show light up the sky!! 🌌

The second of Beaver Island’s lighthouses was built in 1856 at Whiskey Point. The name originated from the commonly traded provision of whiskey, rumored to be a weak whiskey. Today, all that remains of the lighthouse is the tower, stretching 41 feet tall into the clear blue skies!

Welcome to the south shore of Beaver Island! This is Beaverhead Lighthouse and she’s beautiful. She was decommissioned in 1962 when a radio beacon was built on the property. We love visits and climbing the spiral staircase. As we walk the steps, I can’t help but think of the light keepers as they worked tirelessly protecting those on the waterways.

I remember as a little girl sitting in my grandparents window and bird watching with them. We’d notice the colors and markings then together look up information in their books. I always loved when we’d come across a rare sighting! This love has continued into adulthood and is fostered by the unique opportunities hosted by Beaver Island.
