UPDATE: Belhaven offices will remain closed tomorrow, Thursday, January 23, due to hazardous weather and travel conditions.

We ask that our citizens also take caution and stay off the roads. These temperatures are unlike any we've seen in a long time. Freezing temps will prevent roads from thawing and may create issues, like black ice, when driving.

Temps are predicted to drop possibly to freezing. Are your pipes prepared?

Disconnect Outdoor Faucets
Disconnecting your outside faucets is one way to reduce the risk of freezing. Because they are outdoors, they are exposed to the cold air and can freeze quickly. This can cause the pipes exposed to the cold air to crack or burst. To disconnect them, locate the main water pipe and turn it off, drain the water, and cover the hose with a protector or a towel. This will help to keep your pipes from freezing and save you from expensive plumbing repairs.

Keep A Dripping Faucet
During the winter months, let your faucets drip slightly to prevent the water pipes in your home from bursting. This is because water expands as it freezes and can create pressure in the water line. Turning on a faucet can relieve some of that pressure and prevent the pipes from bursting and causing a plumbing emergency.

We'd like to take a minute and recognize the recent good works of our own Town Council member Nathan Van Nortwick. It's easy to forget that our elected officials have "real jobs" outside of their work for the Town of Belhaven. Great work, Nathan!

The City of Washington has awarded four of our BCEMS employees with Life Save Awards for their actions during a call that occurred in Washington in October. The certificate states that "their timely and professional treatment resulted in the patient regaining not only a pulse and respirations but also was later released from ECU Health Beaufort and returned home. Their efforts, along with the others at the scene, show their values, commitment, and duty to excel." All of our employees have worked so hard and are so dedicated to their professions, and our agency is so proud of all of them and their hard work. Beaufort County NC Emergency Services
