Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and Sun, and the rotation of the Earth.

These crazy creatures are known as polychaetes, this specifically is a blood worm. Blood worms provide an important ecological service. They are highly mobile, burrowing into the sand or mud with their pointed snouts. This activity is called bioturbanation, or mixing of the sediments, and it allows for much needed oxygen and nutrients to penetrate into the deeper layers of sediment. The burrowing also provides habits for smaller creatures to thrive, helping to drive biodiversity.

The Eccentric Sand Sand Dollar or Dendraster Excentricus is a cousin to sea stars, sea urchin and sea cucumbers. They are mainly found in sandy, intertidal zones where within one square meter can be home to more than 600 individuals and their groupings are know as a "purse of sand dollars." They can be purple, blue, brown, green, or black depending on the species. They are covered in small, delicate spines, tube feet and hairs( Cilia) that help them move, eat and breathe. These help them to feed by moving food to their mouths which are located on their bottom side and on the upper body the spines work like gills to breathe. Slowly sifting through sand particles they use their powerful jaws to grind sand to feed off the algae and use the metals processed from the sand to help weigh them down in strong currents. Please remember proper beach ettiquette by treading lightly you never know what's living just below the surface, avoid reaching into tide pools as sunscreen on your hands can be harmful, avoid moving rocks that are larger than your head and gently replace them exactly how you find them, and do not take anything home from the beach ( unless it's trash) old shells, rocks and driftwood are used for homes and shelter to other creatures like crabs, barnacles, fish and hosts to seaweeds, these actions also express respect and gratitude to the sacred lands of the Coastal Salish People.
