Our American Flag painted on birch bark representing who we are as a nation; “still standing, still strong and devoted to a life of courage”. I have always admired New Hampshires state tree the white birch for it’s characteristics; color, strength and vulnerability. Over the years I have collected various colors of birch bark as I hiked the trails in the white mountains. One day I came upon a smal
l piece that resembled the flag and the creativity process began. Painting is done directly on the bark as it is found in its original state of well-being. I do not tamper with it nor do I peel it off the trees. Most of the time nature has already done the work and pieces come off the trail dry. Following the natural pattern of the birch bark the thirteen stripes and fifty stars are strategically painted on by hand making each piece unique. Art does not appeal to everyones eye including my own, but there's something about the red, white and blue that gives us all a sense of patriotism. My wish is to see these flags get noticed and receive the attention they are so deserving of. My studio is set within the trails of the white mountains in New Hampshire. Its nothing I own just a free space I travel to. A setting that inspires me all the time. My workplace is in my home where I allow pieces of bark to dry until they are ready for painting. A day may start in my kitchen where I paint on a table. It's where I have the most adequate lighting. Once a piece is complete and ready for drying I usually bring it to another room within my home where it can be kept safe and sound. American made means pure quality in craftsmanship. We were founded on principles and take pride and stand behind the products we have ownership over.
