SOUTH END (Scapegoat)
Dearborn River Trailhead (Scapegoat)
From Augusta, take County Road #434/435 south for about 15 miles to the Bean Lake junction (travel straight south out of Augusta on the main street). The pavement ends approximately five miles south of town. Continue approximately 10 miles more to the Bean Lake turn-off. At the junction marked Bean Lake or Forest Access turn right (west) onto the Dearborn River Road #577 and travel about 5.8 miles passing Bean Lake and turn left into the Dearborn trailhead near the end of the road. This road passes through the C-N camp before entering the trailhead. The road past the trailhead is private and gated. The first 1.5 miles of this trail is through private property, please respect the private landowners and stay on the trail.
Smith Creek Trailhead (Scapegoat)
From Augusta, take Montana Secondary Highway #434 southwest for 3.6 miles, turn right (west) onto Smith Creek Road #215 and follow it for about 12 miles to the Smith Creek Trailhead. Parking is available at the trailhead. Access to the trailhead and the first two miles of the trail is across private land with a county road and trail easement. Please respect the private land and stay on the road and trail.
Elk Creek Trailhead (Scapegoat)
From Augusta, take Montana Secondary Highway 434 for about 6.5 miles. Turning right (west) onto the E1k Creek road #196, continue traveling for an additional 10 miles to the trailhead near the end of the road. Parking is available at the trailhead facility (before crossing Elk Creek). The road that continues across the creek is an access for a privately owned cabin.
BENCHMARK & SUN CANYON ACCESS
South Fork Sun Trailhead (Benchmark, Bob Marshall-Scapegoat)
From Augusta take the Benchmark road west about 14 miles. At the junction with the Beaver Willow road #233, turn left and follow the road for 17 more miles. It ends at the South Fork Sun Trailhead and Campground.
Straight Creek Trailhead (Benchmark, Scapegoat)
From Augusta take the Benchmark road west about 14 miles. At the junction with the Beaver Willow road #233, turn left and follow the road for 15 more miles, turn left (west) onto Road #9229 toward Benchmark Campground, after crossing Wood Creek, turn right into Straight Creek Trailhead.
Mortimer Gulch Trailhead (Sun Canyon, Gibson Reservoir)
From the Augusta Forest Service Office (follow signs from main street Augusta), drive west and follow the Sun Canyon Road #208 27 miles. Turn east (left) into the Mortimer Trailhead parking area.
TETON CANYON ACCESS (BOB MARSHALL)
South Fork Teton Trailhead
Access: From Choteau, drive 4.4 miles north on US Highway 89, turn west on the Teton River Road #114. Follow this road for approximately 16.5 miles and turn left (south) onto Road 109 at the sign for South Fork Teton. The road crosses the Teton River, just after the bridge turn right (west) at the junction. Follow the South Fork Teton Road #109 to the trailhead at the end of the road, about 10 miles. The trailhead provides for parking of horse trailers and single vehicles.
Middle Fork Teton Trailhead
Continue straight on paved North Fork Teton Canyon Road #144. Pass the Forest Boundary, and travel approximately three miles to the Cave Mountain Recreation Area. Turn left (south), and cross the bridge. Continue to the Middle Fork Teton trailhead at the end of the road, past Cave Mountain Campground.
West Fork Teton Trailhead
From Choteau, take US Highway 89 for 4.4 miles north, turning west (left) on the Teton River Road #144 (first 17 miles are paved). Follow this road 33 miles to its end at the Trailhead. The trailhead provides for parking of horse trailers and single vehicles.
BLACKLEAF ACCESS (BOB MARSHALL, DUPUYER CR.)
Blackleaf Trailhead
Travel north from Choteau 13 miles to Bynum. Follow the sign just as you enter Bynum to Bynum Reservoir (left-hand turn), and take the gravel road. Follow the road straight (keep right) at the Bynum Reservoir turn-off and travel another 17 miles, following the Blackleaf Game Range signs; continue to the Blackleaf Trailhead. The trailhead is relatively undeveloped, with only an outhouse and primitive parking area. The road to the trailhead is rough along its last ½ mile, but can be taken slowly in passenger cars. There are also areas to park off the road just inside the Forest boundary, before the rough road starts. Please note that the Blackleaf Wildlife Management Area is closed for recreation from December 15 through May 15. It is okay to drive through it on the county road to access Forest land, but please do not recreate on the state land.
BIRCH CREEK ACCESS
Swift Reservoir Trailhead (Pondera County facility)
From Dupuyer, Montana, drive north on Highway 89 approximately ½ mile to the Pondera County Rest Area. Turn left (west) just before the rest area, and travel approximately 19 miles to Swift Reservoir. The county-managed trailhead is on the south (left) side of the road, and includes parking and camping.
